Hi I've been on Carbimazole for a year & my endo wants me to try Propylthiouracil has anyone out there been on both & how do they compare?
Propylthiouracil: Hi I've been on Carbimazole for... - Thyroid UK
Propylthiouracil
Hi Lisa
I have been on both the PTU works better for me I have to say. I am one of those people who gain weight when Hyper I just kept on gaining on cabrimazole the PTU does not have that affect on me.
It doesn't work for everyone I am just happier on it although I have to say I have had a battle to get it. The last Endo I seen refused point blank to give me it and I really struggled for 18 months.
This time with the PTU my bloods were back to normal within 6 weeks. It is strange that a lot of doctors don't like the PTU because if you read the data sheets for both Cabrimazole and PTU the risks are identical.
It might not work for you I am just saying it works for me and I am happy with it there are lots of people it doesn't work for you can only try it.
Good luck
Elayne
Thanks Elaine I will give it a try I think. I'm just a bit concerned about the dosage - 200mg a day whereas with the Carbimazole I'm only on 20. Are you still on medication?
Did the Endo give you a reason for wanting to change?
Hi my Endo is keen for me to try the Iodine treatment or have my Thyroid removed. I'm not ready for that yet. I feel nauseous most days so he suggested we try this treatment first
I'm sticking it out for as long as I can. I've read such awful things about people fighting to get the right dosage when they are underactive. I am managing to work & I think when you go underactive it starts all sorts of other problems off. Do you feel better now?
Hi Lisa - I have just been reading your post and I am on PTU. I am wondering what has happened on your journey? Did you end up taking PTU? How are you?
