Can dehydration cause thyroid problems.

Feeling angry and unwell and wondering what is the point anymore.

But to start at the begining......

I was taken to hospital November 1913 through an allergic reaction to an antibiotic , I became dehydrated. When I left 2 days later I was told I had an over active thyroid and given Carbimazole. Until then I was fine

Over the year I began to get more symptoms, I have lost over stone in weight. My muscles are non existent now. I hurt everywhere. I have had sinusitis for well over a week. Seen GP 3 times who can find nothing wrong.

I had a blood test about 2 weeks ago as had been taken off the Carbimazole. When I rang for my results off Endo. all I got was a letter saying my blood fine and they have signed me off. No results were sent. I am determined to get them.

Since recently researching dehydration and thyroid I believe I would have been fine if not given the medication. Dehydration can affect the thyroid.

I am feeling really unwell like flue, no strength or energy.

I am getting on but other than Parkinsons diagnosed 2010 I was doing fine. Walking my dog every day, gardening and shopping. Now, I am housebound at times and utterly depressed.

Oh I also have very painful Carpal Tunnel in my right hand and wrist of which a doctor

Said I would have to have general anaesthetic for because of my tremor. I believe that's not advisable with hyperthyroid.

I would love to know your thoughts. Do I ask GP for a blood test.

Cicely, I think if dehydration caused hyperthyroidism it would have resolved within a few days of you being rehydrated. Low and high thyroid results are often discovered by accident during tests for other things. Contact your endo's secretary or office and ask for your recent blood results to be sent to you with the lab ref ranges. Say you will contact PALS and make a subject access request under the Data Protection act if they aren't sent to you within a fortnight.

It's possible that you have low thyroid after being on Carbimazole and this will improve now you've stopped taking it. Other hyperthyroid members have reported feeling a bit odd and unwell as they come off Carbimazole but symptoms usually improve within a few weeks.

Carpal Tunnel is a common symptom in hypOthyroidism and it may resolve without surgery as your thyroid levels improve. If you need general anaesthetic just make sure that the anaethestist is made aware that you are in remission for hyperthyroidism.

Thank you Clutter will follow your advice. Feeling really unwell at the moment flu like aches and pains everywhere. I think my oldest daughter is coming to Dr's with me on Tuesday. she's worried about how my health has gone downhill since this thyroid problem.

The weakness in your muscles happens quite quickly with bed rest and less mobility.

My husband had septic arthritis, and his muscles were so weak he was referred for a hip op.

However, our daughter in law lent us a bicycle exerciser - so you can build up muscles quickly.

Ten minutes every day worked wonders for my husband - I can't keep up with him now!
