Sue, the natural treatment for autoimmunity is an autoimmune diet, lifestyle management and so forth.
Dr. Amy Myers MD has some good info on her site. She had her thyroid nuked (Graves) and regrets that path so now she tries to give an alternative approach. The allopathic docs don't deal with the underlying autoimmunity. I think the Graves side is tougher to deal with but good results have been achieved. The downside is it takes discipline. PR
There are lots of hyperthyroidism alternatives you can do at home. Start by eating Bugleweed, Broccoli and Cabbage, Soy products, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Sea Vegetables, Berries and Indian Gooseberry. These foods can help you with the production of thyroid hormone.
Chris Kresser has just done a blog on his site about LDN for Graves. I have his Newsletters so it arrived in my Inbox just a couple of days ago. His wife suffered and he did mention how few side effects there are. I realise this is not a natural treatment - but thought it worth mentioning in this context....
Marz, what is LDN please?
Low Dose Naltrexone. Was used for people with AIDS in large doses. Now much smaller doses have been successful for people with various auto-immune issues. Not available in the UK - but there is a website of the same name....
Thank you
Silver Fairy, I think Naltroxene may be used in the treatment of alcoholism in the UK but low dose Naltroxene is supposedly beneficial for autoimmune diseases honestmedicine.com/
Hi Clutter, how do you get Naltroxene? Does it need to be prescribed? I am having problems with antibodies and am looking for ways to bring them down. Thanks
Hi Suze, they might find this interesting reading:

You need to scroll down to part IV to get to the specific part on hyperthyroidism, but the whole thing is worth a read.
Hi Sue, have started taking Ashwagandha 2 weeks ago, it's supposed to help balance both under and overactive thyroid and adrenals. I've heard good things so thought I'd try it. My level went up for the first time in my life (has stayed stable until brand changed) and had associated adrenal probs. I took myself off the beta-b's and anti-deps, took kalms and Ash, B complex vits and magnesium. Have done more in a month than the 3 months on meds. Have slight adrenal fatigue now but doing it naturally is working for me. Hope it helps.
Many thanks everyone, I shall be passing this information on. She certainly wants to avoid surgery if possible. Thank you.
Hi Suze I have heard that carnitine can help, if you Google "carnitine and thyroid" there is a lot of info E.G;

I found that I have to take them together. They work synergistically, that is neither of them alone worked as well as when I combined them. Also, regular L-Carnitine did not do it for me but Acetyl-L-Carnitine dramatically improved my thyroid blood test results and symptoms.
