Why don't you phone your endo and ask why she is giving you metformin.

Metformin can interfere with thyroid - can't remember whether it's T4 production or T3 conversion - so you might need an increase in meds, Metformin is also used for prediabetes (and, for a limited time, by some functional doctors for metabolic syndrome - pre-pre-diabetes). It increases insulin sensitivity so should help prevent weight gain round the middle and normalize blood sugar response. Shouldn't be taken by people with liver (or kidney?) problems.

According to Dr Aqsa Ghazanfar in his book, "The B12 Deficiency Survival Handbook",

Metformin is one of a number of drugs that depletes the body of vitamin B12, along with proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers and nitrous oxide (used in anaesthetic and dental injections, which inactivates B12).

Hi Redcatstar,

You should not be put on Metformin if your blood sugars are normal and you are not type 2 diabetic. The drug will lower your blood sugar levels even further and could cause you to go hypoglyceamic, a very dangerous condition that proves fatal if not treated promptly. I think you really need to find out why you have been prescribed this drug especially has it's main side effect is kidney failure and vitamin B12 deficiency. It's considered one of the safest diabetes drugs but is still a dangerous drug if not taken properly and for the right reasons. Also, it is designed to increase the bodies sensitivity to insulin and causes quick weight loss but it does not cause a huge weight loss, the average loss is about 8lb, and you have to follow a low carbohydrate diet for it to work.

I hope this information helps.

TT x
