Anxiety can be a sign of being over- or under-medicated. I personally used to grind my teeth constantly and was unaware of doing so, when I was taking Levo, because the T4 was not being adequately converted to T3. When I started taking T3-only at the right dosage, my teeth clenching stopped.

Recently I have been taking medication for Trigeminal Neuralgia, which interferes with absorption of thyroid medication, leading to under-medication, even though I am on T3. I noticed one day that I was grinding my teeth again! So, clearly, for me, the tooth grinding is a sign of anxiety due to under-medication.

However teeth-clenching and chewing the inside of the mouth can also be a sign of over-medication.

May I suggest that you have a full thyroid function test including T4 and T3? This can tell you the full picture, and hopefully explain your problem.

It is so painful - I used to get lots of mouth ulcers where I bit my cheeks.

If you have some results including T3, please post them on here and you will get some more help to understand what might be happening.

If your GP will not or cannot get the T3 tested, perhaps you might consider doing it privately? Thyroid UK has links to private labs who will test for you. I find personally that the easiest is the Blue Horizon home test.

I always go for the Thyroid Intermediate Profile on the Home Testing List.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem but quickly realised it was my tongue and inside of my mouth that was swelling because the meds were not working properly!!

I have had this for over 4 years. My mouth is so sore. I saw my dentist & GP, no one suggested it could be my thyroid. I have indents all along both sides of my tongue. Diagnosed underactive in May. Hoping that the thyroxine will make a difference once it is at optimum level. Clemmie

I too had a sore, swollen tongue with the distinctive scalloped or pie-crust effect. It did indeed resolve with decent level of levothyroxine. But don't miss that low B12 can also cause a sore tongue.
