Functional Doctors...?

So I am really really considering starting treatment with a functional Doctor in California by the name of Dr Kajiki (valleythyroidinstitute.com/)

I assume they are no different than other online Doctors who take a overall approach and examine adrenal/GI/allergy/autoimmune problems. They basically set you up with a plan and many patients have seen benefit (valleythyroidinstitute.com/.... Not sure why it's a bit unspoken here. (Btw I live in London UK)

What would your advice be to me guys? Symptoms are too much to bare and the NHS does nothing :(

Muscle pains/brain fog/hair loss. I've been diagnosed with Hashimotos for around 8 years now!

Anyone...anything...? :S

About 10 months ago you were given advice from Waveylines and hampster1 about your B12 - which was VERY low. Did anything happen about it ? That could be the cause of your problems. Also check VitD - Ferritin - Folate - Iron.

T4 will not convert into the Active T3 if the above are low in the range. They need to be OPTIMAL. Do not accept normal from your Doc - you need to have copies of the results with ranges and post on a new post....

My vitB12 last October was 306pg/mL.

My GP and my endo did nothing about this. The range is 191-663 so to them I'm "doing great" :(

I have blood test papers for the VitD - Ferritin - Folate - Iron, that I'll be going for tomorrow morning. Last time (after some supplements) it was all fine. Infact, the GP wrote that I may now buy my own VitD tablets.

The biggest questions is...and I assume I need to start a new post for this...but my TSH is high yet my FT4 is ok-ish.

23/07/2014

FT4 - 13.8

TSH - 10.72

FT3 - 405

25/07/2014 (YES 2days later)

FT4 - 11.3

TSH - 6.35

Bear in mind I have not been on any meds for 6-8 months as Levo made me feel worse.

As the TSH varies throughout the day so can the results. You say you aren't on medication, but do you have clinical symptoms and do you feel well?

It0022 profile image
It0022 in reply toshaws

23/07/2014 11:20am

FT4 - 13.8 (12.0-22.0)

TSH - 10.72 (0.27-4.20)

FT3 - 405 (4.0-6.8)

25/07/2014 (YES 2days later) 9:14pm

FT4 - 11.3 (12.0-22.0)

TSH - 6.35 (0.27-4.20)

Sadly, I do not feel well and my endo is not doing anything either.

Symptoms include and exceed: brain fog/confusion/forgetfulness/muscle aches all over/ leg cramps/hair loss/ constipation/ can hardly walk due to fatigue/ and the list can go on...in simple words I have 90% of hypo symptoms except the weight gain oddly.

shawsAdministrator in reply toIt0022

I didn't gain weight - some people don't but you definitely have hypo symptoms and it's not good that you are not on any medication as that in itself may have serious consequences.

Would your Endo not add some T3 to your levo to see if that would help?

It, I can't explain the wide variation in results but you obviously need thyroid hormone replacement. If you can't tolerate Levothyroxine would your endo or GP prescribe Liothyronine (T3)?

It0022, Dr. Kajiki is a DC (Chiropractor) and can't write scripts for thyroid medication. If you are dealing with Hashis you would probably do better with someone who can write scripts, a DO, MD, or in some states an ND. If you check Mary Shomon's site she has a good list of docs in the US and some are in NY. There are lots in Phoenix, Dr. Christianson NMD , Dr. Starr MD and others and many in California, Dr. Holtorf MD, Drs. Shames MD, Dr. Gottfried MD. PR

I live in London UK and found this Dr on the internet. His patients seem to have had great success. Appointments are held over skype. I'm running out of options as the brain fog and fatigue is tooo much to bear :(

It seems as if you guys are not too keen on me going to him. Well that is what it seems. Eeek

So what are the recommendations for my hashi symptoms. Endo does not care. No T3 med allowed and tests are all fine. Grrrrr

I'll check over Mary Shomon's site now in the mean time...

I don't get the impression that anyone is against you going to him, it0022, it's just that no-one knows anything about him. And it would seem that he isn't the easiest option, you being in London and him being in California. You said he can't prescribe, and he certainly couldn't in the UK, but if he can give you good advice, then why not! Is he expensive? If he helps you and you tell us all about it, you might start a trend! We'll all be wanting to talk to him! lol

Hugs, Grey

He charges about $500 a month. Provides a 30min skype consultation every 2 weeks. Most of his patients said they were "70-90% better" in the space of 4-8 weeks...I'm still considering but then again $500 just for a plan/diet?! ha!

If i do i'll be sure to reveal the secrets...

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toIt0022

It is expensive. Have you actually talked to anyone that has followed his plan?

It0022 profile image
It0022 in reply togreygoose

That's why I came here in hope that some one has heard of him. If not, at least someone who has taken a similar approach with a functional Dr who fixes gut issues and gives you a diet plan..mind you I've only watched his patient interviews recorded by himself. :o

It, post a question asking for recommendations for functional doctors in London/UK (however far you are prepared to travel) and ask for replies via Private Messages.

In your opinion is functional Doctors what I need?

I myself have no clue and just base it upon patient reviews (I know, sorry)

I know the autoimmune side needs to be dealt with but don't know what kind of Doctor I need.....I'll start a new post :)

It, my opinion is that you need some thyroid hormone. I don't know anything about functional doctors although I like the concept of holistic treatment. Members who have seen FDs seem happy with their treatment.

Hmmm, I'll ask my GP today about T3 treatment.

(I may of been brainwashed into thinking I don't need hormone replacement but rather need my other issues gut/infections fixed only)

I’m no expert, but Marz does give some good advice. 306 pg/ml is still not that great for B12, despite what the doctors will tell you. Have you considered taking the ‘Active B12’ test? The serum b12 test shows total b12 available, but not actually what is available to your cells, which is only about 20% of the figure. Serum B12 should ideally be nearer 1000.

I’m hopefully about to have the active b12 test done soon, and then I can take supplements (sublingually are best apparently). It is important to have the test done first, as once you start supplementing the results for future tests will be skewed. Search for ‘active b12’ on the forum, or have a look at this post I just commented on - healthunlocked.com/pasoc/po....

You might also want to take a look at stopthethyroidmadness.com/d... which explains the steps you need to go through to ensure that other elements, like Marz mentioned are optimal, before investigating other potential issues (which it also explains). Also have a look at stopthethyroidmadness.com/r... and stopthethyroidmadness.com/l....

Then once you have got through all that, you might also consider reading up about mercury poisoning as well. See my post at healthunlocked.com/thyroidu..., which you may or may not find useful.

Give that lot a go and hope it helps you.

Thanks, I will begin some sort of B12 treatment after I read up on the links above!

Have you considered a private doc in the UK? Might be easier, and as you're in London there's bound to be someone suitable nearby. This is the website for the BSEM, you can search for a practionioner by medical condition:

Trouble is, I am still to meet anyone who highly recommends a Dr here in the UK who has such a success rate...if anyone/admin does know anyone I'M ALL EARS!

(I just want this severe fatigue and brain fog to vanish!)

Not what you're looking for?
