Second opinion

I saw a endo a couple of weeks ago and I'm not at all happy with the patronizing treatment she basically said that I'm fat lazy and old. I would like a second opinion. I've got two questions 1 how do go about it and can I choose who I want and 2 can any one recommend some one in north London NHS of course

And such a helpful response too. I mean, you wouldn't have known any of that if she hadn't pointed it out, would you? Who knew you weren't a teenager anymore? Who knew you were overweight? Who knew you were so knackered from being undermedicated that you didn't have the energy to do much? Goodness, how have you got this far in life without realising all of that? So good of her to point those things out to you. She must be soooo clever.

But not quite clever enough to realise that she's not helping you by stating the bleeping obvious!

Oh Emidjemal, really feel for you. {hug} Have you emailed Louise for the list of more sympathetic endos? Hopefully there should be one near you in London.

I do that's why my doctor referred me she wasn't happy with my sky high anti bodies but the enfo never even mentioned them

What a nerve! No wonder you were stunned. Considering your GP sent you because of your antibodies in the first place. I mean you can't make antibodies up. - if you have them you have them. Hopefully you will be able to find someone new and kind. :-)

You aren't alone. I was told to push myself away from the table once in awhile, to get off the couch once in awhile, and go on a duct tape diet. Doctors are so kind. I have always starved myself, was bulemuc for awhile, and exercised like crazy, to the point if not being able to move. I worked with horses, as well. Now it has been 20 years and when they tell me I am just getting old, they are correct. But I am still hypo. And not a one I have ever seen gave a hoot. Best of luck to you. I am in the States, so hopefully it will be better for you.

I am sorry you have appear never to have been on optimum medication for your thyroid gland. These are two links - one is archived as Dr Lowe died in 2012 who resided in the USA but was an adviser to Thyroiduk.org. A humane man who was disgusted by the way many are denied treatment due to the reliance on TSH or undertreated. Some links within the topics may not work but they are so informative:-

He also developed a natural thyroid hormone which doesn't need a prescription. In fact, I am sure he was a genius.

You cannot argue with ignorant people - it's a waste of time. Self help can assist in you getting well by reading as much as possible and learning.

Two excerpts:-

Dr. Lowe: The "hormone problem" you need to consider is the T4-replacement you’re on. A study published in 2000 showed that weight gain is the usual result of being on T4-replacement therapy.[1] This confirms what hundreds of patients on T4-replacement have told us: they gained weight on T4-replacement and couldn’t lose it, even if they dieted and exercised, and they lost the weight shortly after switching to a slightly TSH-suppressive dose of a T4/T3 product, such as Armour or Thyrolar. These patients weren’t fat and lazy when they were on T4-replacement. Instead, they weren’t breaking down fats fast enough because T4-replacement was ineffective for them. And most likely, that’s exactly why you’ve gained and retained weight.

There are many topics with questions/answers although some links within may not work as the site is archived but tons of how to help ourselves and I think many now know more than conventional .endocrinologists/doctors.

email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org who has a list of NHS Endos/private doctors.

You poor thing. I totally understand this. I have battled weight all my life - for 60 years. "People" including so called Doctors automatically think it is because you eat too much - I could eat a lettuce leaf a day and still put on weight! I was stable at 14st 11lbs for years and then suddenly around last Christmas I piled on a stone -collapsed and finally discovered my thyroid had gone defunct on me - which I had suspected for years. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was fortunate enough to find this site and took the wonderful advice I found - got myself to a private Doc and got myself on NDT - now on Nature-Throid and have lost a few pounds - which I hope will continue - TBH, I think it has been my thyroid all the time! Hi Always research your own Endo, never stay with one not happy about, referral after careful research!Rules I follow with all consultants.

Best wishes,

Jackie

How dare these 'specialists' throw a guilt trip at patients for whom these things are symptoms! And from another woman too. If you can find the energy you really should report her. Whether these people are just lazy and don't want the hassle of adding yet another thyroid patient to their caseload (most of them aren't thyroid specialists at all) or whether she's ashamed of the one-size-fits-all, basic treatment she would be able to offer you if she diagnosed you properly - who knows. But it's bang out of order.

God forbid any doctor dare tell me any of what you were told, Emidjemal :( That is why I now take my husband with me to appointments - when doctors have said something unhelpful to me, or have dismissed how I feel, it usually reduces me to tears and I then can't explain myself coherently. Thankfully, my husband is dead scary when he calmly explains :)
