It's about time your GP learned ALL of the clinical symptoms. This is for hypothyroidism:-
thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...
and hyperthyroidism:-
thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...
Give her a copy of each and tick off your symptoms on Hypo.
And about time she learnt about how the mind works ....... Apart from anxiety as a direct symptom of hypothyroidism you can be anxious because you are hypothyroid and are not being treated. Treat the hpothyroidism and it's likely your anxiety will improve on both counts tell her. When my GP asked if I wanted antidepressants I told him that if he properly resolved my thyroid symptoms I wouldn't feel unhappy and worried . You may wish to see another GP in the practise with a greater understanding and a more open mind.
Maybe your dr should do some serious CPD (continuing professional development). Have you had your adrenals tested? For me thyroid and adrenals go together and I know that anxiety can be caused by hypoadrenalism. There's a good questionnaire here adrenalfatigue.org/take-the... If you think this might apply to you it is well worth ordering the saliva cortisol test from Genova UK or Blue Horizon.
Your GP talking rubbish, I never suffered with anxiety, until I developed an under active thyroid. I was a changed person.
Mental Health services know much more about this and they check thyroid and vitamin b12 levels as some of the tests they do before admitting people into services.
Alas I think they still follow the same NHS guidelines for diagnosing. Print out the pages from the links others have provided,
GPs do not specialize in Thyroid disorders, so don't know everything.
Good luck
always remember that ' anxiety ' can come from ANY health issue -- or indeed any other life issue -- that you have at this moment in time ....... so for someone to state that it only comes from 1 issue just proves that he/she knows absolutely nothing about medical issues [ or possibly more pertinent they do not WANT to know ] ....ask him/ her next time if someone that is anxious about an interview or exam IS HYPERTHYROID and can they then supply the pills !!!!!!.......in my view you have been told total bunkum .....alan
I am hypo/Hashi and when undermedicated my anxiety is through the roof!!! Your doctor needs educating!
When I am levelled off on meds I have a sense of well-being.
