Anxiety

I’m battling ongoing serious anxiety and it’s beginning to take its toll. Especially as a single parent it’s hard. I’ve discussed it with my daughter today and we agree I’m not depressed it is anxiety and it’s affecting my mood and health.

If I go to my GP what could he prescribe? Has anyone had any success on finding a medication that has helped their anxiety?

I think you need to test your Free T4 and Free T3. Tick off your symptoms in the link below. I think you may have more than a couple.

If both FT4 and FT3 are low, that could be the reason you feel anxious.

I’m on t3 only and FT3 is upper range. I don’t think it’s just my thyroid causing it but something I need further help with as counselling and mediation is helping but not enough but thank you

Hi ! Not sure if you've looked into diet ? Caffeine ,alcohol, processed foods and sugar can all cause anxiety .

Hi MissFG,

I have suffered anxiety for years. My worst symptoms were my fight or flight kicking in at random times and for no reason at all, also complete lack of sleep. Last year my G.P put me on Sertraline 50mg. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it such as a slight upset stomach and some nausea but that has now passed and is helping enormously. I sleep so well now and hardly ever have any symptoms of anxiety. Just thought I would share.

Thank you I’ll discuss this with my GP. I have this awful overwhelming “fear of doom” I think they call it. Plus I have symptoms as you described it too. It’s been a tough few years with a childhood of emotional abuse, rape a few years ago and daughter having life threatening injuries getting hit by an illegal driver 2 years ago right after I was really ill and got diagnosed with hashimotos. So more than just my thyroid but I think they’re all contributing to my anxiety.

I’m again having counselling and meditation which I use to get myself to sleep at night, and yoga when I’m well enough. But think it’s time I got some help as it’s not getting any better x

Sorry you've had all that to contend with. I think you're doing the right thing by using different approaches, such as the counselling and meditation. I've been on mirtazapine in the past which helped to calm anxiety, and there are a number of the SSRI drugs which work well to reduce anxiety. Lorazepam also helps but is highly addictive.

Have you had your cortisol levels checked throughout the day? Cortisol is the stress hormone. I wouldn't be surprised if your cortisol is out of whack with all that stress. Taking vit C and magnesium can help balance cortisol.

This one may sound completely whacky - it did to me when I first came across it - thetappingsolution.com/what... but in desperation I gave it a go, and it does actually work. If nothing else it might be another weapon in your armoury.

You have been through a really difficult time so no wonder you feel so anxious. You are doing the right thing by counselling and meditation, and I think you should continue this even if the G.P agrees to medication. There is only so much anxiety one person can take....good luck!

Thank you! Might try valerian first which I didn’t realise is in Kalms so maybe I just try them again every day see if it helps. I’m just tired already so don’t want to be a zombie on any more meds. But least I’ve some more options to try thank you x

I would suggest you check your cortisol levels. Medichecks do a 4 sample saliva test, results will tell you where your cortisol levels are throughout the day.

I’ve had anxiety problems in the past which were linked to abnormal adrenal function.
