Has anyone had any problems getting pregnant with Graves' disease? Has anyone god any advice
Thanks
My neice has Graves disease as I also do.She is aged 34 and had a baby boy 11 months ago.She was diagnosed with Graves about 4 years ago had carbimazole whilst waiting for thyroid removal op.After the op she waited a year then trird for a baby and took just over a year to become pregnant. The baby has had tests and all well with him.My neice takes thyroid replacement now.She was advised to have surgery rather than the radioactive iodine ig she wanted a family soon after.Good luck x
Lynne,
Thyroid disease affects fertility and can make conception more difficult. The NICE recommendations for planning pregnancy and managing pregnancy advise referral to a specialist for management of hyperthyroid women. As Carbimazole easily crosses the placenta barrier it is recommended that hyperthyroid women should switch to Propylthiouracil (PTU) for the first three months of pregnancy.

I wish you every success.
I have graves & recently became pregnant after around 4 months trying, however it resulted in miscarriage - apparently we are at higher risk. I wasn't offered any extra care by my GP but should have been so if you do get pregnant you need regular tests as TSH needs to be below 2.5 I think & antibodies need to be regularly checked as they can affect the baby's thyroid.
Hi Lynne, I'm not sure this applies but this man has interesting concepts about thyroid and fertility.
Hi , just came upon your thread but if you do read this dont worry. I was diagnosed with Graves when I was 10 weeks pregnant, went through a worrying pregnancy on PTU before giving birth to a beautiful baby boy of 8 lbs who is now a strapping 6 foot 16 year old.
At my local hospital in the midlands they have an endocrinologist solely for women trying for a baby, or who r pregnant. I wish u all the luck in the world x
