Try not to worry, it's likely that what you have is a 'hot' nodule - that is, a nodule which is producing too much thyroid hormone even though the rest is normal. In which case, it is not a cancerous growth. I had a 'Hot Nodule' many years ago - it was just one problem in a series of episodes due to Graves' so completely different in other ways.

I had Hashimoto's which made me feel very ill and a large nodule which was compressing my windpipe and gullet, making breathing and swallowing very difficult. No pain. The nodule was tested and results were inconclusive. After removal it proved positive for Hurthle cell carcinoma and three months later the other side was removed as a precaution.

The test, usually ultrasound guided Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) involves putting a needle into the nodule in your thyroid gland and sucking out some cells for testing. It is uncomfortable as you need to lie down with your throat thrust upward and local anaesthetic is applied. I wouldn't describe it as painful although it will be sore and bruised for a few days following.

If you've pain it really is unlikely to be ThyCa. If it is thyroid cancer it is one of the most easily treated and removed cancers and the long term survival prospects are pretty much as good as the rest of the population. I hope your tests are benign.

Hi I know how you are feeling. I found a lump on the right side of my thyroid just came up out of know where! They did an ultra sound & said it was about 4cm in size but said it didn't look aggressive. I was booked in to see a specialist & a biopsy. I've been a wreck worrying about having cancer but luckily the lump is benign. As the lump is large & it feels tight on the right side of my neck I'm having it removed & the right side of the thyroid next week so I'm not looking forward to that but at least I am getting sorted. So fingers crossed that yours will be benign. Try not to worry but it's easier said than done x
