I had a pre op assessment a few days ago and the nurse said my pulse was fast so would test for thyroid.

For the past few few weeks I have felt cold (hands and feet especially) and had palpitations at night (scary). My blood pressure was high but it always is in a hospital situation. The nurse also mentioned tachycardia. Are these symptoms of thyroid problems. I am 57.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I really hope so too.

I suffered from tachycardia on and off for over a year and it was both painful and very scary. My iron was desperately low, and fixing that has made an enormous difference - I rarely have a fast pulse now.

Thanks humanbean. It will be interesting to see what my iron levels are. My blood was last tested about twenty years ago.

This has happened to me so many times in a pre-op situation and almost stopped me from having my ops. For me it is 'white coat' syndrome, as i am fine after the op. However,if you have cold hands and feet and have night palpitations as well, it is right that the nurse is also testing your thyroid.

palpitations are so scary. sympathies. my first ENT specialist, many years ago, told me they were nothing to worry about. however, they are not normal and are certainly symptomatic of something - possibly a thyroid malfunction. difficult to say which way that might be (hyper or hypo) given you're running cold rather than hot. standard hyper symptoms would be palpitations, losing weight, running hot, tons of energy. although a GP along my thyroid path noted that palpitations can also indicate hypo thyroidism - feeling cold, putting weight on, no energy and ... palpitations! but perhaps your iron is low, and fixing that will fix the problem.

you don't mention why you are in a hospital situation - that might have a bearing on the palps? although I'm not sure they would be brought on by 'white coat syndrome' (nice way of putting it!) in the same way that FAST heart rate and high blood pressure can quickly be.

I am hypothyroid and on T4 and T3. I recently had surgery and my discharge was delayed for a day because of a very fast heartbeat. I am obviously not in a position to say whether your experience was related to a thyroid problem, but what I can say is that I have suffered no after effects. I have had a very good result from the surgery. Good luck :) .

Thanks JanJan2, the fast pulse/palpitations/feeling cold have only started happening in the last few weeks so I hope it is just being nervous about surgery.

Thanks humphrey, my 'surgery ' is a minor procedure. It's a hysteroscopy for endometrial polyps. I am scared of having a general anaesthetic and have a phobia of hospitals.
