NDT = Natural Dessicated Thyroid.

It is made from the thyroid gland of an animal - usually a pig, but cow is sometimes used. The thyroid gland is dried (dessicated), ground up and turned into pills somehow.

Because it contains all the hormones and substances produced by a normal thyroid gland - T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin - many people find it much easier to tolerate and feel much healthier on it than they do on artificial hormones like levothyroxine which only contains artificial T4.

I don't know when levo was first used on a regular basis as treatment for hypothyroidism, but before it became the treatment of choice, NDT was the only treatment available, and it has been used successfully since the late 19th century.
