With an under active thyroid should I be eating more calories to lose weight?
Started dieting in Sept 12 and was diagnosed in April 13, by Sept 13 I had lost a stone. Since then I plateaued and have in the last couple of months put half a stone on.
Anyone got any tips/ideas??? Depressed is an understatement

It's more difficult to lose weight if you're hypothyroid because your basal metabolic rate - which determines how rapidly your body burns calories when at rest - is lower than normal. When you severely reduce your calorie intake, your body eventually reacts by further reducing its metabolic rate, no matter your thyroid status. I have reactive hypoglycemia, which I believe is common in hypothyroidism. This means that eating more than a small amount of carbohydrate causes the pancreas to over-respond, releasing too much insulin and causing a precipitous drop in blood sugar. One effect of this is that you become hungry, specifically for more carbohydrate. For me, the most effective diet has been a balanced diet of ~1800 calories daily, including no more than 60 grams of carbohydrate. (Unfortunately, this is essentially impossible for me since I've become vegetarian.)
I've found it easier to stay with a diet if I also exercise. It can be difficult to exercise if you're hypothyroid, but you can probably manage something non-strenuous like hatha yoga. The reason it helps may be purely psychological. I hate the thought of "wasting" my exercise by going off my eating plan!
I know only too well how discouraging and depressing it is to follow a restrictive diet and not lose weight. I wish you the best of luck in finding an approach that works for you.
Is this even when correctly medicated? I can't remember what I was doing to lose the stone in the first place but I have recently increased my exercise but I don't think my diet has drastically changed.
How long have u been a vegetarian and does it help the hypoglycemia and or hypothyroid. I have gained weight and haven't been able to stabilize either condition. Any suggestions. How much do you weigh to eat 1800 calories? Constance
I became a vegetarian gradually over several years, eating less animal flesh over time almost without conscious awareness I was doing so. After a solo trip to England (I live in the US), I realized that aside from the requisite fish & chips meal, I'd eaten no animal-derived foods the entire trip. That was when I declared to my husband that I was eliminating animal flesh from my diet.
Vegetarianism does not help with either hypoglycemia or hypothyroidism. My reasons are primarily ecological. Now I do not count calories, carbohydrates or fat, although I'm carrying far more weight than is healthy. Vegetarianism can help with weight loss, but only if you avoid sweets and other "junk" food and eat limited portions of high-fat protein sources such as nuts and cheeses. I've very gradually got to 46 pounds less than my maximum weight (more than 10 years ago), and I seem still to be very slowly losing weight.

Thanks will definitely have a look. I've been thinking about going gluten free and 'browsing' at the paleo diet. Its just a matter of taking the leap....
I was diagnosed Hypothyroid about 7 years ago, I suspect it had started around 10 years before that but it was so insidious I didn't realise what was going on. Once I was diagnosed everyone said to me you'll immediately lose 7-14lbs but that never happened for me (possibly because my medication wasn't at the right levels). I was very overweight, weighing in at 19st 7lbs at my heaviest, in January 2012 I decided enough was enough and I started calorie counting. I lost 3st in about 9 months and then plateaued for another 3 months, I then introduced a 30 minute brisk walk in to my daily routine and that kick started the weight loss again. I plateaued again towards the end of last year and so in January I started The Two Day Diet in conjunction with the calorie counting, I am now down to 12st 8lbs and feel so much better but still have a way to go. You have to keep shaking things up, your body gets used to eating and exercise patterns so when you plateau you need to shake things up and make some changes to kick start things again.
When i started dieting I was calorie counting using myfitness pal, which I still use. And I was doing a fast ish 3 mile walk about twice a week. I also did some swimming for a bit. Then as winter came I stopped the walking which is probably why a plateaued. I have started running and walking more the past few weeks and also play badminton once a week most weeks. I still calorie count and haven't been having loads of off days, so i think exercise is the key. I just thought I would have started to see a loss from the exercise, but i seem to be steadily gaining at the moment
I also use myfitnesspal, what have you set as your weekly weight loss goal? Also are you logging your exercise and eating back the calories you're burning through exercise?
Its set at 1lb a week at the moment and a daily intake of 1,200 which does seem very low if as someone above mentioned I should be eating more to adjust for my abysmal metabolism.But if Im correctly medicated by metabolism should be ok? Yes I log my exercise, but I don't think I always eat back the calories.
That's realistic but you need to eat everything you're burning so perhaps that's the issue, your body will hang onto it if you're not eating enough because it thinks it will be starved so do make sure you do that. I'm on 1310 calories a day but on my Two Day Diet days I'm eating about 800 and am still losing. If you're correctly medicated I assume your metabolism should also be ok.
