Bad day!! Is it "normal" for my tongue to swell with hypothyroid? Been feeling rubbish for days and its hard go talk
I have had 3 bouts of tongue swelling and a very sore mouth in the last year. I am not yet on optimum meds but think yes it is a hypo symptom.
Yes my tongue swells up the more shattered and the more i over do it. Sorry dont know why. Gets sore at edges as its sits on teeth.
I got a very swollen tongue with scalloped edges while I was untreated. It encouraged mouth ulcers to form on the edges of my tongue (I'm a martyr to the damn things), and I had to alter the way I spoke just to accommodate my tongue in my mouth. I also bit my tongue frequently as a result.
I would say you are either under-medicated or wrongly medicated. My tongue shrunk down to a more normal size after I'd been on T3-only for a while.
I saw Dr Skinner last year and he was the person who told me that a swollen tongue was a common symptom of hypothyroidism.
Yes, I also had swelling of the inside of my mouth resulting in my teeth catching my cheeks!!
Yes, I had a swollen and 'wooden' tongue which I bit regularly when eating. I also slurred my words at times and for several years, whilst under-medicated, couldn't say words like parallelogram, aluminium. Disappeared when sufficiently medicated. Dr S always checked the state of my tongue: indentations where teeth rest is a sign of swollen tongue.
