Supplementation with vitamin D and tryptophan is a practical and affordable solution to help prevent autism and possibly ameliorate some symptoms of the disorder.

Hi Yes, D is a very important ( hormonal) but not nearly so dangerous if out of range than calcium.

I find this article very interesting as well.

It's about how the mother's gut flora affects the newborn child.

Literally everything starts and ends with the gut. Quite upsetting to read when the answer appears so simple and the lack is so devastating.

Yes isn't it. I'm trying to create awareness but most people I talk to say 'nah, it couldn't be that simple' or 'Doctors would know about it if true'. Yeah right.

Doctors appear to know very little about nutrition. My vitD was <10 and Dr. Numbers told me to eat more leafy greens.

My friend's grown up son is profoundly autistic and has never learned to speak other than one or two words. I remembered her distress at being told she was over anxious when she knew something was wrong and the wasted years until his autism was acknowledged.

Yes that's right. It's also meant to be a very good antidepressant.

Thanks Clutter interesting read.

Just in case anyone digs this post out looking for comments - I tried tryptophan and D in combination on my Asperger's son to no discernible effect. Could have been that the dose was too low, or it may only help a sub section.

Earlier in his life I supplemented D when he was about 10, and there seemed to be a marked improvement after two weeks which lasted for some time - a huge improvement in confidence and mood. I am sure he would have been D deficient at that point. However, I can't be certain that it was the D which helped him (I gave 2,00iu daily) - other things were changing, and he got a TA for the first time in school at this point, which may have had an impact on his mood.

At age 12 I tried melatonin in a very small daily dose, this had a remarkable effect for almost a year, and then it seemed to wear off, as many parents have reported. However, it gave him some relatively happy months.

Of course, the fact that they seemed to work for him does not necessarily mean that they would work for another high functioning autistic child. However, they are all relatively low risk interventions, and all can be stopped without risk or withdrawal if they do not help.
