Help with cortisol test result please.

My cortisol level from a blood sample taken at 8.30am was 348 nmol/L (171-536). Is this significant?

Hi See my reply to some one about Adrenal testing, higher up on today`s forum.

Thanks Jackie. I did do the 24-hour urine test too, but it seems the results for that have gone to the endo and not my GP, so I don't know what they are.

Sue,it does take a week for the test results. The urine test on it`s own is not use. it has to be done with the cortisone tablet , midnight and the bloods at 9 am. I hope that is what you had

No, I'm afraid not - just weeing into a bottle of acid, but no cortisone tablet. Could you fill me in on how that's supposed to work so I can challenge him at my next appointment.

Thanks

Yes, my Endo very good and fussy, in the very best way. 24 hour urine collection, with preservative kin container, provided, or 2 if you need a lot! from the Lab., a low dose of cortisone, scrip from the Endo. Then a blood test, when the collection returned, must be at 9am. Doing a 24 hour collection. precise instructions, not always given, must be right,Pass urine at a time, into the toilet, that time starts the test, rest of urine collected last time at the time started, even if bladder seems empty!24 hours. You must collect every bit!

It was all done exactly as you describe Jackie, but what I need to know for my next meeting with endo is the purpose of the low dose cortisone tablet please? Why is that better than what he has done?

Hi I only know that it is integral. \it is only a low dose, I would imagine it is to do with the absorption, sorry I do not know. However, my Endo, who I trust said that it was needed and although I could not even have cortisone, even in local injections, it was safe. it did not effect my heart at all.

I would try and l.ok it up, Mayo clinic USA is the site docs use, not sure if anything on that though. otherwise ask the Endo, how much it matters. Obviously better than most that at least he did the test!

It's actually a very good reading

Thank you. That's encouraging....or it? If it's not my adrenals, then I've hit a brick wall!

I suffer from adrenal insufficiency and have spent years trying to get myself fixed both through NHS & privately.

Trust me, a 348 reading at 8.30 is really very good. In fact, I would regard it it as excellent. X

OK, I'll count myself lucky that I don't have adrenal insufficiency then!

Thanks
