Member of Scottish Parliament, Elaine Smith was incorrectly diagnosed with Lymes before being successfully treated for hypothyroidism. Wondered how common this is?

Hi, If you are correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease (this needs a very specific test - the Western Blot Test) then it can in time cause thyroid disease. It often comes with co-infections (i.e. additional bacterial infections). All of these produce toxins which some people are genetically incapable of eliminating from their bodies, and thus they are continuously recirculated through the gut, liver and bile and increase as a consequence over the years, causing a build up of toxins all over the body, and affecting all kinds of endocrine function including thyroid function. It's all pretty hideous and often goes on for years and remains undetected in this country because the test used here isn't adequate.

So if you definitely have lymes does it make sense to treat your body as if the thyroid has become depleted and hypothyroid? I understand many of the symptoms of lymes and hypothyroid overlap. I also appreciate that Dr Skinner treated patients based on symptoms and so was less interested in hypothyroid blood tests than symptoms and medical history. I have a friend who has lymes and I am concerned that some of the symptoms could also be hypothyroidism. However I know that more often than not thyroid test results are deemed normal. I am therefore wondering if a lymes patient with "normal" hypothyroid test results could benefit from a trial of Natural Dessicated Thyroid such as Armour. Would value your thought on this please.

My daughter has Lyme disease and its co-infections and is currently being treated to remove the toxins created by them. The same medication is also removing mould biotoxins and biotoxins created by the HHV6 virus from her system This treatment only started this year. However, she has had hypothyroid symptoms since she was 12 (21 years ago) and was finally given thyroid replacement 12 years ago firstly in the form of thyroxine, then Armour and finally T3. We believe that the T3 is what has kept her alive as this condition can be life threatening to anyone who is genetically susceptible as she is. I posted recently on the subject. healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Is your friend familiar with this site about Lyme Disease? tiredoflyme.com Her thyroid function could well be affected by Lyme Disease even though the levels of TSH in her blood show as "normal".

I am not sure about lyme's disease but so many of us are diagnosed with anything other than a thyroid gland disease, mainly due to the TSH or if you haven't been tested whatsoever.
