As far as I can see, it is a new way of indicating posts/questions which are for members only. That is, those you have to be logged in to see.

I don't think I would have chose that symbol - but having spent not more than a few seconds thinking about it, I don't immediately have a better idea to hand.

When I get questions that are 'greyed out' and have the little padlock showing I realise I have been logged out without actually doing it myself.

This is interesting and odd.

I can remain logged in for days or weeks at a time. (Although it might be that something behind the scenes logs me in again automatically.) That seems to work on my laptop (which rarely actually ventures out of the house), my iPad, and my Android mobile phone.

I don't know what I am doing, or what is different about my software, hardware, settings, etc. which makes my experience so different to yours.

If it were only home, I'd be thinking our near-static ip address might be helping. But I don't get the problem out and about either.

I know I used to be like that. I wondered if it was because of anything apple had done - there was some sort of an update a while ago. I left it for ages without applying it then I got fed up with the little icon and applied it, now I have to use a password every time I want to get in and I have to log in to TUK every time I shut the lid of my iPad. I made an appointment to go speak to a genius at the apple shop the other day then cancelled it again because my hairdresser told me how to fix one of my problems and my appointment was late in the afternoon which would have meant hanging around. I might go next week.

Virgin have just made some sort of changes that affected our desk tops though so that we couldn't send out emails, I hardly ever use my desk top these days so when my husband was grumbling about his emails not going out I didn't know that mine weren't either, eventually he managed to put in a password that it liked and the desk tops and are back in business. Weird how we could get messages out on machines that were using the wifi but not the normal ones that didn't.

Computers are wonderful when they are behaving themselves then a nightmare when they're not.
