Need urgent advice about my thyroid. Doctor not helping at all.

I'm really hoping someone can give me some advice about my thyroid problem, I'm getting worried. For nearly 2 weeks I've had a really sharp stabbing pain in the side of my goitre whenever I swallow, and it's getting unbearable. I did mention it to my GP when I saw her, but she didn't even seem interested. I also mentioned that I haven't seen my menstrual cycle for nearly 3 months, but again she wasn't interested. I would have thought she would recommend me to have a scan on my neck as I'm supposed to, but nothing. Instead I have been shunted back to Endocrinology where they will do absolutely nothing, and the pain is getting worse.

I did ask about my tablets being changed to one of the natural brands after my pharmacist said that my current medication is not working, but she refused and said she doesn't know of anything other than Levothyroxine. Does anyone know what the pain could be? I know there are risks of cancer with a multinodular goitre, and I should be having scans which they won't give me.

I would appreciate any help with this problem.

Don't muck around...get to another doctor, fast. and keep looking for one until you find one that has some sense about the thyroid. It is really hard out there with the world wide thyroid problem. its just horrible. Most gp's only spend a day learning about the thyroid when they train, so they are not of much help, that is why we go to specialists, but even they seem to be struggling with their patients with all this generic medication around. we really have to research everything for ourselves and tell them what we need. I find the phamacists are more help than our gp's, so perhaps talk to a few of them, and see if you can get some more advice.....and google, google and google some more, until you get some help.

Hi This is one of the mistakes I made. I saw a private doc, as GP would not refer me. I changed after adventures to a private Endo. They look after all the Endocrine system, which is a huge amount. Also because of their speciality they know so much about all the body.

If it was me, I would find a good Endo, myself. Then go ASAP to the GP and ask for an urgent referral to your choice Also in the mean time, lots of blood tests and more importantly a thyroid ultra sound. However, make sure it is at a large teaching hospital, where the scan can be read properly.

To be honest, that sounds worrying so I would take myself up to A&E if it happens again, Dr's are pretty uselesson the whole with these things. Your lack of a period is possibly related as its all hormonal. Years ago I had endometriosis and it took years for anyone to diagnose me. eventually I kept going up to A&E and a young Dr diagnosed it!! I cried with relief! so I know what its like.
