It is advised you change so I would if I was you. I was on carbimazole when pregnant wit my son who is now 9. If I could go back and change I would. Had probs at end of pregnancy, he was quite small despite being 11 days late and he has some health & behaviour probs. so it may not have been the carbimazole but I don't think it's worth taking the risk. It's not recommended in pregnancy for a reason. Hth xx

Don't they change you onto the other one - is it PTU? Just had a very quick Google and it is - loads about it online uptodate.com/contents/antit...

Hi Kerrie,

My happy and healthy 26year old daughter was conceived when I was first diagnosed with Graves Disease and had thyrotoxic crisis, so already you have a plus as you are diagnosed and can plan your pregnancy and care. I was on carbimazole during the pregnancy, which I must admit was difficult mainly because of hyperemesis which I'd had with the previous 2 children as well, and it was a bit of a problem getting my T4 and T3 levels sorted. I had excellent care and was changed to PTU at about 36weeks as I think they didn't want the carbimazole to be in my system when she was born and for breastfeeding afterwards.

My pesky thyroid continued to play up after the birth and I had it removed when she was 6 months old.

She was 3 weeks early and a healthy baby at just under 7Ibs. She has continued to have no problems and now has her own 18 month old. In the last few years it seems she has inherited some of my globular autoimmune syndrome problems.

It sounds as if things have come on quite a lot in 26years and I'm sure treatment protocols have changed for the better, but even then I can say it was a positive experience.

I do hope you take the plunge and have a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby.

Take care

Alison

I think I had first hyper attack after first son - who is now 30, I thought it was post-natal depression - only diagnosed this summer, had last baby aged 45 and she was fine... got pregnant in three months, perfect pregnancy and birth (8.2oz) very health daughter, make sure you get t4 and t4 done - insist as TSH may skew picture. Get a nutritionist to look at your diet - it's probably cheaper in the long run than dabbling with lots of different supplements. I've found acupuncture helpful (it's also good for conception) and the low FOD map diet may help heal gut which can exacerbate thyroid problems. x

Hi, I had been trying for a baby for 6 years and nothing was happening, then my thyroid went really wonky and I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and put on carbmizole, after 2 month on it fell pregnant so it must have been my thyroid was a bit dowally all along. I stayed on carbmizole all through my pregnancy and I was really well all the way through and gave birth to a very healthy 9lb baby. ( who will be 27 years old next month. ) Hope this helps

This thread has been helpful to me so thank you to everyone who has replied. I have just found out I am 3 weeks + pregnant and am really scared as I have been taking 40mg of carbimozole every day to date. I obvs did not know I was pregnant! Have an appt with doc tomorrow but my initial conversation with her has upset me. I'm hoping there is a chance I can come off it/get it reduced or something. Your replies have given me some encouragement that it's not the end of the world and won't necessarily harm the baby. Which I will do everything I can to avoid. So thank you and anymore experiences welcome x

Hi all. Im 33 and hoping to conceive again but just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and on 40mg a day of carbimazole. My consultant is strongly recommending that I dont get pregnant but this is frustrating me. Does anyone else have or had this similar dilemma? Thank you x

It is a very difficult position to be in. The official Summary of Product Characteristics for Amdipharm Mercury Company Limited Carbimazole says this:

4.6 Fertility, pregnancy and lactation

Carbimazole crosses the placenta but, provided the mother's dose is within the standard range and her thyroid status is monitored; there is no evidence of neonatal thyroid abnormalities. Studies have shown that the incidence of congenital malformations is greater in the children of mothers whose hyperthyroidism has remained untreated than in those who have been treated with carbimazole.

However, very rare cases of congenital malformations have been observed following the use of carbimazole or its active metabolite methimazole during pregnancy.

A causal relationship of these malformations, especially choanal atresia and aplasia cutis congenital (congential scalp defects), to transplacental exposure to carbimazole and methimazole cannot be excluded.

Therefore the use of carbimazole in non-pregnant women of childbearing potential should be based on individual risk/benefit assessment (see section 4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use).

Cases of renal, skull, cardiovascular congenital defects, exomphalos, gastrointestinal malformation, umbilical malformation and duodenal atresia have also been reported. Therefore, carbimazole should be used in pregnancy only when propylthiouracil is not suitable.

If carbamazole is used in pregnancy, the dose of carbimazole tablets must be regulated by the patient's clinical condition. The lowest dose possible should be used, and this can often be discontinued three or four weeks before term, in order to reduce the risk of neonatal complications.

The blocking-replacement regimen should not be used during pregnancy since very little thyroxine crosses the placenta in the last trimester.

Carbimazole is excreted in milk and if treatment is continued during lactation the patient should not continue to breast-feed her baby.
