Hi all Now I know I can't have anything to eat once I've taken my Levo with a glass of water but I need my cup of tea in fact i need two cups to get me up and running so to speak. My question is how will this affect the effectiveness of my Levo x
Tea in the morning : Hi all Now I know I can't... - Thyroid UK
Tea in the morning
I think that because all tea, including green tea, is grown in flouride-rich soil it contains a lot of f. which is bad for the thyroid. Have you tried herbal tea instead? Some of them can be very refreshing..
Hi jaxnbreeze I have tried to like herbal but I don't like any if them I've been drinking tea for over 50+ years I don't drink alcohol so tea is my tipple xx
Wow i had no idea. I have been having a tea with milk every morning. I had no idea about the calcium in milk being a problem or tea. I will try the night time and see if that helps. See this site is so useful. No doctor had told me this. Thanks everyone.
Do you take milk in your tea? as milk contains calcium and calcium in a definite no, no where levo is concerned. I didn't realise just how much calcium was in milk until my endo warned me.
Sorry if it's not what you wanted to hear, as I too just looooove me cup of tea.
Have you tried taking your levo of a night - so much simpler - and then you can eat and drink what you want when you get up.

Hi Moggie yes I'm afraid I do, I take milk in it not very much as I like my tea strong and hot. I can't take my Levo at night as I take omeprazole before bed to counteract the acid from a hiatus hernia and also paroxitine for anxiety xx
Is there no time of day that you have a 4hr window (2hrs before and 2hrs after).
Moggie x
Can't say I have as I'm at home all day with a disabled hubby and we have lots of family visiting at all times ( house goes like a fair as we have 5 kids 17 grand kids and 4 great grand kids as well as 2 foster boys ) so kettle is always on lol xxx sorry I sound so negative but it looks like I'll have to reduce the milk until I can cut it out compleately xx
And how do you feel on the level of medication you are taking - if you feel fine then just keep doing what you are doing but if you still have symptoms then your morning cuppa could be the problem.

Some days are better than others but generally I get by. Just having a bad day today with no energy pains in my back bottom and down my legs like sciatica also badly constipated but feel a bit better after having "been". Sorry if that's too much info but that's how it goes, can feel not too bad for a couple of days get bunged up feel awful for a few days until I've been xx
and have you had all the normal vitamins checked like ferritin (very important for enabling you body to use your levo), B12, vitD, iron and folates. If so have you got the results.

Don't have any blood results only had it taken twice since diagnosed in July and only seen the doc once but get more blood tests taken on 23rd this month and with the great help of this page I have a list of questions to ask and will ask for printout xx
I wouldn't be just asking question I would be asking to have all that I have listed in my last answer tested and try not to tell the GP where you are getting your info as telling him you are a member of a self help forum will only give him/her the chance to dismiss all that you are asking/requesting.

Hi Moggie,
If you take your levo at night do you have to wait a certain amount of time after eating/drinking tea etc? I tried it for a couple of days and it seemed to help my sleeping, itching, red neck etc but I was worried too close to other food and drink.
Thanks x
You need to leave, at least, two hours before and after eating and drinking anything other than water to get the full benefits from your levo.

Thanks Moggie! - & sorry for hijacking weenana. Looks like I'll have to try & give up my evening cuppa then - boo hoo!
This just seems like some extra form of torture! Is this the same for all thyroid meds, or just levothyroxine?
A lady from this site, who was on T3, used to see a professor at one of the leading teaching hospitals in London and he advised her to do the same with her T3 and when I was on T3 I used to get better results when I keep it away from food. Dont know about NDT as I have never taken it, and your right, going without a morning cuppa must be torture - that's why I take my T4 at bedtime.

EEEK! I love my morning cuppa but someone mentioned milk being bad with levo.......so are we saying my nice healthy breakfast muesli has to go? Cant have that without milk......
Some people set an alarm for say 5am, take the levo, go back to sleep for a couple of hours....
It wouldn't suit me - I'd never go back off - but it does it for some people..!
There is no research about the effects of tea itself on levo, but there is some on coffee - since no one is sure whether it might be the caffeine or something else, people tend to err on the side of caution....
Calcium is well-researched however, so milk in tea is out for sure.
Also eating...
However, the point is if you are feeling well doing what you are doing, then don't worry!
If you are still having loads of symptoms, it may be something to do with not absorbing the levo very well - which COULD be down to how you are taking it...simples!

I get up every night to go to the loo between one and two in the morning and take it then. Works for me! Good luck x
Reading this with interest! I currently take mine am and have tea and breakie straight after! If I start taking at night do I just miss the am one and take it at bedtime?
Well this just goes to show you how useful this site is! I have been hypo for 13 years and from the beginning of treatment my GP told me to take my thyroxine first thing in the morning with my cup of tea! I think I might try taking it at bedtime though if it is going to be better for me?
I think that taking your Levo with or without certain foods or drinks is a very individual thing. Some people get on OK taking their pills with whatever they want. If you want to experiment to see if you do feel better taking it on an empty stomach or with water with a two hour window etc etc then experiment. You may find it makes no difference and then you are free. If it maes a difference then you can make the choice whether to carry on depriving yourself or not.
Thanks to everyone who has responded to this post it's been quite enlightening x
rest assured folks you do not have to give up tea at all. Just make sure you take your levo a good hour and half to two before you have your cuppa, I take my levo at around 6 am and breakfast at 8ish and I am fine I am guzzling tea all day and I feel ok xx
