Reacted during synacthen test.

Hi everyone, i had the test this morning and i did have a bit of a reaction. I had stomach cramps nausea and feeling faint, it was instant as soon as the stuff went in. Does this mean an allegic reaction? My heart has only just got calmer it's been pounding. Didn't really expect this. I took all my drugs in as instructed, but didn't get asked and nothing was put on the form for the lab.

Really relieved my bladder didn't perform, just a few stingy wees, but drinking plenty of water.

When I "failed" mine, I just couldn't stop crying - otherwise I felt OK, so don't know what that signifies. The insulin stress test gave me nausea and vomiting, blinding headache and dizziness, which sounds more like your reaction.

Hi Angel of the North, thanks for your reply. I know what you mean, i'm looking for answers as to why i feel as awful as i do. If the test comes back as "normal" it will be a big let down and i too am likely to be upset. I can't bear that feeling you get from the medics that you're just making a fuss about nothing. My private adrenal test certainly proved my cortisol is low, so does that leave us with another flawed test on the NHS?

I had 6 years of regular steroid injections into various joints, 5 years of a steroid nasal spray and 10 years of steroid creme's for psoriasis. This must have had a negative effect on my adrenals.

I'm sorry you had a similar reaction to your insulin stress test, really unpleasant for you.

It's probably not what you want to hear but I passed out within a few seconds of the injection. When I came round I felt nauseous and broke into a sweat. My result was "normal".

Hi B, OMG you had a bad reaction, must have been awful for you! Ihad profuse sweating when i left the hospital, but i get that if i'm anxipus anyway.

Yes i fully expect the "normal" result. It's so depressing :-(

I too became slightly dizzy and broke out in a sweat, although I never fainted, my test twice came back as normal. But wouldn't it be nice if these so called professionals could elaborate on why this reaction occurred........all they bloody know to do is read numbers!

in reply tobuggles84

Hi Buggles 84, poor you doing it twice :-( The nurse told me anything below 450 whatever it's measured in is suspicious.

I may have reacted because of allergies although i only seem to be allergic to iodine. I think it's more likely to be through the simulated stress load! No nothing much is revealed at the time.

The acetic acid got me in the end, my bladder was burning and painful around 12.30 am. So just dosed up and went to bed.

I am confused....nothing new there :-) I am trying to get this test done to rule out cushings & adrenal fatigue......in fact i was at the Drs yesterday asking for it but my Gp said he was out of his comfort zone so I came out without a result.

I was under the understanding for this test you had to do a 24hr urine collection, at 12pm you take a small amount of cortisol in tablet form, the next morning at 9am have blood taken is this correct ?

What has confused me is you are saying you had something injected into you !

MAY I ASK YOU & OTHERS WAS THIS TEST CARRIED OUT OVER NIGHT IN HOSPITAL OR AT YOUR DOCTORS SURGERY ?

I am desperate to get this test carried out my health is really bad.....but how do you get someone to agree to carry it out.

My gp has given me a blood form to check my cortisol but I feel that bis only a small part of the test & will not give the proper results......I would like the full test.

PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE ME ADVICE i'm going to blow a fuse, it is hard work to have to keep battling with consultants & starchy Gps. Jillymo X

Hi

The short synacthen test is done at hospital, takes just over an hour. You have first baseline blood test, then an injection, another blood test at 30 mins and another at 60 mins after the injection. I think this test would probably have to be ordered by an Endo, not sure GPs would know what to do with the results. Some people say this test is of no use but I had it done and it showed no adrenal problems so another box ticked for me. There is also a long synacthen test which takes bloods over 24 hours but it's not used very often.

Thanks for this hypohen. The problem with this test is that it only shows if you've lost at least 80% adrenal function. I've already had a low result on the adrenal stress profile, which is supposed to be very accurate. It looks like you have to swot up on this too and manage and treat it yourself!

Thank you very much for the information, glad to hear you have another box ticked.

This is all such hard work when your feeling so poorly but i'm not giving up.

I need this trest done for my own sanity. Jillymo x

Hi again Jilly mo. I think it's important not to pin any hopes on this test. No matter who you talk to, this test comes back as normal unless you have Addison's Disease. I believe there are only about 10k people in the country diagnosed with Addisons.

Good luck with your tests. X

Thanks for the info, I wanted the test done to rule out cushings & renal fatigue.

Just got back from my appointment with the opthamolagist for my dry eyes & sjogrens, he has plugged my tear ducts.

Take care

Hi Jilly, i paid for the Genova saliva adrenal stress profile. The results were low cortisol so i took the report from the lab to my GP. She sent them to an endocrinologist i waited 8 months to see. He said the adrenal stress profiles all looked the same but offered me the synacthan test. Blood is taken as a baseline to see what your normal cortisol levels are, then synthetic stress hormones are injected into the canula. Samples of blood are then taken at 30 & 60 minutes. It's to see how much cortisol is released to deal with the stress.

The urine one i wish i could have but because i take cimetidine it affects results. I may be wrong but i think you can only do this privately? I know a lot of people on the site have paid for this.

Hope this helps. We're all in the same boat re adrenals that's why we resort to self medicating. I fully expect my results to be "norm"al despite my low score on the adrenal stress profile. I paid approx £80 with the postage for this test.

Hey,

Glad I found this thread as I had a very similar reaction when I had mine done yesterday. Within 5 minutes of the injection my skin when hot and I broke out in a profuse sweat and my ears went funny and everything started to go white. The nurse sorting the girl on dialysis next to me asked if I was ok and I don't remember much after that so I assume I passed out. It was HORRIBLE. I was nervous about the test so I'm wondering if it was just a total overdose of cortisol - Your body's cortisol levels are highest in the morning, then being stressed = more cortisol, then an injection of cortisol would just mean my body possible had too much?

I don't know. But I'm glad I'm not alone in it. Felt like I was drugged for most of the day afterwards - incredibly tired and foggy headed. Not fun at all. The nurses said my blood pressure dropped when all of this happened so that's what probably made me feel horrible.

Anyway, did you get your results Helcaster?

in reply toautumnphyre

Hi autumnphyre, my results started at 400, then went up to 700, so nothing wrong ;-) what I would say is by the time I had the injection it wasn't early morning, I'm terrified in hospitals, watching the poor old lady next to me having several people trying to put in a cannula didn't exactly make me feel relaxed! I don't think they're bothered in the least at what level your cortisol starts off, just the fact it increases. I know from the adrenal stress profile mine is very low, and I have all the symptoms.

I'm so sorry you reacted badly to the test, my personal opinion is that mostly it's not worth putting yourself through this! Don't pin too many hopes on getting any answers.

Hugs. X
