Hi, Pharmacist has suggested I try liquid thyroxine as Eltroxine not able and I was fine on that. Is anyone taking it? and are you ok?

If you can get your GP to give you liquid Eltroxin then your a more persuasive person than me as it is quite expensive and my GP flatly refused on cost issues.

I don't actually know of anyone on here who has, or is, taking it due to the cost.

Does your pharmacist know that Mercury Pharma (who make Eltroxin) due a generic levothyroxine which has exactly the same makeup (ingredient) as Eltroxin. I have been on Eltroxin for over two years and have just had to change to the generic Mercury Pharma levo and, so far, have found it o.k.

Hi, thanks for your reply.. I have just picked it up from the chemist. It's Eltroxine, but in the oral solution ( liquid ) will see what happens! Loz x

I suspect, but cannot be sure, that both Teva and Mercury Pharma Eltroxin-brand liquid levothyroxine products are the same. There is no reason to think that Eltroxin tablets and liquid have anything in common except that they contain levothyroxine and have the brand-name Eltroxin stamped on them!

The cost of liquid levothyroxine products is prohibitive:

It's the binding agent in the tablets, that don't suit some people. Being liquid there is none, it's pure thyroxine and sugars. Thanks Rod, for your info x

The liquid levothyroxine products contain not only levothyroxine and water but also:

Glycerol

Citric acid, Monohydrate

Sodium Methyl Parahydroxybenzoate (E219)

Sodium Hydroxide

Some people may be fine with those other ingredients - I know for sure that not everyone can tolerate the products.

I was trying to say that tolerating Eltroxin tablets does NOT automatically mean that you can tolerate either Eltroxin or Teva liquid levothyroxine.

Many people seem to find Mercury Pharma Levothyroxine tablets are fine for them instead of Eltroxin tablets - they are claimed to have the same ingredients and are made in the same factories as Eltroxin tablets. I know some people believe there is a difference but I cannot say I have noticed any.

Hi Rod,

I've just checked and it is mercury phama I have been taking. I feel very hypothyroid since being on them. My levels are tsh 0.99.. They won't test my T4!! I'm thinking to try the liquid, before resorting to going private. It's a nightmare !

I have every sympathy with the difficulties people have - I have had a relatively straightforward medicine journey but even that included problems with Teva's levothyroxine tablets.

I would jump at the chance. I believe they have withdrawn Eltroxin in tablet form.

My GP has prescribed the Oral Solution now on a monthly basis as I could only take Eltroxin, which is no longer being manufactured. The cost is approx £80.00 per bottle as he looked it up. His thoughts were that if I cant take anything else I have to be given something so he has no problem in prescribing it whereas my last GP almost fainted at the suggestion of prescribing it lol Good luck and take it while you can.

I have had endless problems since they withdrew Etroxin brand tablets, and don't get on with either of the alternatives (I understand that no matter what they're called, they're going to be one of two). I too have felt horribly hypo since I stopped taking Eltroxin. My pharmacists (two of them) are lovely, and did do all they could to help track down some Etroxin and said the same: there is a liquid form but it is £80 a bottle. I didn't even ask the doc. But now, following the DI02 test I do have an appt with an endocrinologist which I have never had in all the years since my dx.

Let's hope we can sort out some kind of realistic protocol, whether that included liquid or Eltroxin or not.

My other problems of food & drug sensitivities, allergies and asthma (meaning I really should not be taking anything containing appreciable amounts of sodium benzoate and the like, just complicate matters.

Hi Judy, thanks for your reply.. I'm on liquid now. It tastes awful but hopefully I will see an improvement in next couple if weeks. I've requested my t4 and T3 be done and the doctor has finally agreed to call the lab to do this as they have previously refused.. Did you have a battle getting the D102 done?

No, I didn't - I simply paid privately, and told the doctor as a courtesy that I was going to do it. She was OK with it and happily referred me to the endocrinologist once she knew there was 'good reason'.
