I have had an under active thyroid for 15 years but the weight just gets a little worse each year. I am on 175mcg daily and 1500mg of metformin.i am interested to know of any supplements that would be of help to me.

Many hypothyroid people find it difficult to lose weight. Mostly, I believe, is because their levothyroxine is not at an optimum level or some T3 hasn't been added.

You also take Metformin and these are links:-

You will see that levothyroxine interferes with Metformin and/or vice-versa. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion for you.

If we take levothyroxine, any supplements have to be taken at least 4 hours apart. With Metformin, I am not sure.

I take Vit C, CoQ10, sublingual B12 ( I was within range but only just) a vit D spray and an A-Z multivitamin. I tried Evening Primrose but felt I gained weight when I was taking them - could have been my imagination though I suppose but I stopped them.

Being on the right amount of levo helps me.

I tend to lose weight when I cut back on / cut out bread, I still have 1or 2 slices of Cranks lovely wholemeal every day but generally I try to cut out cakes and scones and biscuits. I say try but it does help, I have always taken very little dairy produce and I avoid diet coke too even though I love it, I am constantly battling with my Cadburys fruit and nut addiction though. I know that when I eat that I will put on weight.

I lost a huge amount because of my Graves, I was always 'chunky' before then though, for as long as I can weight has been a battle for me and I'd like not to put it back on but I know it is creeping up :-(

I was up to 237lbs on t4 only now I am around 200 on dessicated. If you just take t4 only, it doesn't work very well at all.

T4 doesn't work well or a lot of people but it does for some. I have a couple of friends and a family member on T4 only who are all well and have all lost all the weight they gained before they were diagnosed.

However, I do not do well at all on T4 only. I didn't even lose weight on dessicated, although I did feel much better. I have now replace some of NDT for synthetic T3 and noticed quite a big difference in how I feel and I seem to be losing weight, albeit slower than I would like :D

Reducing carbohydrate intake has also helped me a lot. I'm not hungry all the time like I used to be and I feel better in mood and more stable generally. I wonder if this sort of approach would help, always_hopeful71. The old advice (which is still currently being given by some) was to eat plenty of complex carbohydrates but it seems that many with diabetes or insulin resistance actually do better with less.
