One person was taking 3300 micrograms a day for about three years without any obvious problems:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/752...

But that is quite extraordinary. Possibly unique.

Why are you asking? How much are you taking?

I am on 150mg a day and I have had a recent blood test as I am feeling not myself again and the gp has sent me a letter to contact him to make a appointment. I know it is my thyroid. I had been told that the max is 200mg.

I obviously don't know who told you that, but they were flat out wrong. The Summary of Product Characteristics for Actavis says this:

This may require doses of up to 150-300 micrograms daily.

medicines.org.uk/emc/medici...

Even then, it does not say that 300 is a maximum of any sort. In the USA they have single tablets which are 300 micrograms.

The British National Formulary says:

(usual maintenance dose 100–200 micrograms once daily)

That is quite simply indicating what is usually required. Again, it is NOT a maximum.

Dr Skinner, Dr Peatfield and Dr Lowe (RIP) are all of the same agreement that nowadays (due to the reliance on the TSH blood test) we are all given too low a dose to make us well. Before the TSH we were dosed according to clinical symptoms till we were better.

Excerpt from Dr Lowe - go to February 17, 2008

If you’re new to the use of thyroid hormone, and you’re up to a dose that should be working for you, but you’re not benefiting from it, be sure to let your doctor and your pharmacist know. The dosage range that’s safe and effective for most patients is between 2-to-4 grains (120-to-240 mg) of desiccated thyroid. The equivalent dosage range for T4 is 200-to-400 mcg (0.2-to-0.4 mg). If you’re not improving within this dosage range, you may have thyroid hormone resistance, or the potency of the tablets or capsules you’re using may be lower than what’s stated on the label.
