I would like to know which hospitals in England offer the best care for thyroid conditions, particularly as regards thyroid operations.

Hi Really the only way is to do your own research. Look at large teaching hospitals, on lime. Then get names of consultants for the speciality, you want one ,who specilises in the surgery required, ie not a general surgery, larger hospitals should have these. Then look at their names on private hospital sites, reasonably near the hospital, Often more info there. Then most have their CV`s on the WEB, put in the surgeons name and location.

I had a total thyroidectomy in November last year at Daren't Valley Hospital in Kent. My surgeon was Andrew McIrvine who works for NHS as well as private hospitals. He is an expert in collapsed veins so has good attention to detail.

Although I only met him on the day of the operation his team beforehand were amazing. The only downside was the aftercare. I left hospital after my calcium levels were sorted and that was it. I had to contact them only to be told that was it! I called my consultant who explained it was up to my GP to sort my medication out. That wouldn't have been a problem if I actually had a doctor who was experienced in total thyroidectomy's. I was fortunate enough for my consultant to take me back and I remain under his care x

I had a total thyroidectomy at Colchester General in Essex.... but can't remember the name of the surgeon. All went well though and I was discharged under similar circumstances as the above post but had annual checkups with my endo for about 3 years afterwards.

I had no post-surgery problems.... although the struggle to balance thyroid hormones has been ongoing and I saw him again a few months ago after a gap of around 7 years. This was only to ask about T3 medication though, which he was willing to prescribe without any issues. Not sure if I'm allowed to name the endo. on here or not.... ?

Just thought I'd put in my penny worth here, as I didn't know that there was choice with consultants/ surgeons I just went for the nearest hospital, not knowing that you can use choose and book.I wonder just how many other people are the same;this should be on Thyroid UKs main site.

In my case I thought that cataract surgery would be straightforward. Not so. So no surgery, and really wishing I knew what I do now and chose a different hospital and surgeon.If I'd allowed the surgery to go ahead I would be really struggling with sight.Got an informal second opinion, plus researched on the internet. Prob is cataract in one eye only and asinometrophia if eyes are not matched. Eg minus 6 and plano ie 0.In two mind re surgery. The one eye option which would be a disaster is minus 3 in cataract eye and minus 5.5 in the other. So asinometrophia. The other option, surgery on a healthy eye.Scary stuff. And now have read up on eg mini monovision. Best option for me now is good vision in one eye.
