Hi Interesting question. I had a hysterectomy , years ago and have/ had polycystic ovaries. I had thyroid disease, but not treated then.It did take a long while to recover, from what in those days was major surgery.Thyroid disease, does make recovering/ healing slower. Not sure if it still would if thyroid is correctly treated. Insufficient treatment is known to make any recovery slower too.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Thank you Jackie, i have PCOS, fibroids and other stuff and am considering it,as its been a problem for a long time now! Will see what their response is to my request tomorrow :)

Take care

Has no-one suggested that your fibroids and stuff are due to your under-treated hypo? Because they probably are. Having a hysterectomy just further unbalances the endocrin system whereas if you get your hypo correctly treated, these problems should sort themselves out.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 41 because of fibroids, excessive bleeding etc. I hadn't been diagnosed at that point although I now know that I've had Hashi's all my life. I consider that hyserectomy to be just one more nail in the coffin of my endocrinolgical health and can't help feeling that they just whip uteruses out at the drop of a hat when they should be looking for the root cause. But isn't that just the way with all things thyroid!!!

Hugs, Grey

Hi Sam,

From my own experience I would do your very best to avoid a hysterectomy and seek alternatives. It's such a major op and I don't think you are ever the same afterwards. It definitely brought on all my health problems, there is a clear link between Hypo and hysterectomy, and also if you are unlucky enough to have a hemorridge (sp) that can really mess up adrenals, piturity gland etc etc. It also caused terrible vaginal dryness, constant tweaking of hormones and in my case it really messed up my sex life too. My surgeon couldn't wait to tell my uterus was healthy. The heavy bleeding was because of Hypo, I had a prolapse, but that could have been repaired. I did find too psychologically my self esteem plummeted for many years. I've had 4 children and I'm very maternal, it was hard to take at 40 I couldn't have more children. It made no sense to want more, but I hated the feeling of not being able to any more.

I had my op privately, so it was a case of putting a date in the diary, no counselling, no real time to think it through, I remember her saying we may aswell take your cervix because that can get cancerous, but there was nothing wrong with it! How I wished I'd been more assertive in those days. It was a monstrous experience.
