What is the connection between taking Thyroxine & coughing in the mornings?

I have recently slightly increased my dose of thyroxine, & developed a cough in the mornings, that goes away after about an hr. Does anyone else suffer from this, & do you know why?

Hi pollen is bad this year, are you sure it is not hayfever., or even the start of asthma, if you have the window open at night, the cold air in the morning can be the cause. i have both. if swallowing difficult and voice effected, ask for an ultra sound of the thyroid. It does not sound to me like this. Also before any increase in thyroid meds you need a new test, TS, T4 and free T3 to check the levels. This all continues until stable.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Thanks Jackie, but definitely not hayfever or asthma. I remember when I saw an endochronologist many years ago he asked if I coughed in the morning, but didn't explain why this might be significant. So there must be a connection, but I haven't got a clue what it might be. Just odd that it's only started after me increasing my dose.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I'm struggling with it too. Not sure if it's related to the thyroxine or sinuses...

No I didn't, but interestingly I slightly adjusted my dose again recently, & the cough has come back. Not really bad, but enough to notice. Definitely not sinuses in my case

Thanks for the reply. It's beginning to really annoy me! I feel as if I'm coming down with something every morning.

Oh dear, mine only seems to happen in bouts now & again, hopefully yours will clear up soon...

I also have had a cough since starting on thyroxine 6 months ago. To start with it was all the time but has gradually dwindled to just mornings - about 2-3 hours after taking my daily thyroxine - although it can also start if I try to talk when walking! I have had 2 courses of antibiotic, a chest Xray and a blood test for pertussis. The tests were negative and I am convinced the cough is related to taking thyroxine. My GP says not but a pharmacist I spoke to thought there could be a connection.

Hi,

I'm sure there's a connection. My cough disappeared completely for quite a while, but I've recently lowered my dose of thyroxine, & I'm coughing again in morning when I get up. Also feeling very tired, so I'm not sure dropping the dose was a good idea. I'm going to go back to previous dose & see if cough goes away again.
