Hi

Not sure if it any help but. I started taking 20mcg Carbimazole at the beginning of December, then had my blood tested after three weeks, there was a problem with the paperwork that ought to have gone off with the blood so I went along and had more bloods done a week later. After that (early January) I got a letter from my consultant telling me to double the amount of Carbimazole. I went to see my endo on 28th February and by that time I had been on 40mcg for two months and felt fairly good - well compared to how ill I had been feeling when i was hyper- the hyper signs had settled down but by the time i got to the hospital I was feeling very cold ( a weird, right through your bones horrible kind of cold) because I had gone under-active. I've got Graves so am now taking levothyroxine - another story.

So to answer your question, it probably took two or three weeks to feel human again - to stop the shakes and pounding heart - but I had I felt so terribly ill to begin with that anything had to be an improvement, then because I was becoming under-active, after two months on Carbimazole only I started getting different symptoms. Are you taking Vitamin C with the carb? My pharmacist kept saying that it was very important to do that.

All I can say is that my body - and probably yours too - seems to be 'a work in progress' hopefully we will get there - wherever that is in the end. Good luck.

Liz :-)

Hi Char, no I didn't have an increased appetite at first but I feel hungry a lot now, I have a permanent battle with myself not to guzzle, especially chocolate and I am having to be really strict with myself. I have the most massive urge to eat chocolate. I can polish off one of those £1 size bars of Fruit and Nut in the wink of an eye - honest a whole bar can be gone in seconds. I have eaten all the cooking chocolate - even the stuff I put in the deep freeze to keep out of my way - frozen chocolate doesn't take long to defrost to eating temperature at all. Also have an urge to eat dried fruit - sultanas, raisins that sort of thing.

Not good. I lost quite a lot of weight but I had been struggling at Weight Watchers for ages, no matter how much I stuck to the diet I didn't lose, I always felt like they didn't believe I was telling the truth and that I had to be eating stuff I wasn't recording . Then over the summer I lost a lot but we were camping in France and for three weeks we cycled all over the place and lived on grilled fish or steaks and salads, pretty much gave up on potatoes and bread and cakes too so I wasn't surprised when I turned up at Weight Watchers MUCH lighter than before, my leader looked really suspicious I'm sure she thought I had crash dieted or something. All in all I lost a couple of stones but I have been this weight before so it isnt as bad as it sounds and I was watching what I ate, not realising I was ill, I think I might have been one of the hyper people you hear about who actually put on weight.

I'm sorry you feel so poorly, it is amazing just how ill you can feel with this. If you can, just do as little as possible and be really kind to yourself, I just lay around and I also slept a lot and got really stubborn and just refused to do anything that was going to put me under any kind of pressure but I'm lucky that my kids have left home and there are only the two of us at home, also I work on a casual basis so I I was able to shelve that for a while because I just couldn't have worked - brain fog, felt rubbish and lack if confidence in myself too. I think being selfish and treating myself like the invalid I felt like paid off - my war cry was "just because I look ok - you dont realise how ill I feel" so don't feel guilty, you are ill, just do as little as you can, take any help you are offered and just ignore anyone who says otherwise. Hope you feel better soon.

Liz :-)

Hi, I was diagnosed over active in December 2012 and was put on 15mg carbimazole and 30mg propranolol but then in March i became under active so was dropped to 5mg carb but still on 30mg prop. However now I have the symptoms of being over active again so had a blood test done on Friday and am awaiting the results. So it's been 6 months for me since diagnosis and I'm still waiting for normality again.

I don't want to scare you but you need to know that everyone is different and you may feel better quickly or it could take a long time. Just be prepared and try not to lose hope that you will find that balance x

Hi

To be honest I was diagnosed in May 2011 and I do not think I will ever be normal again. You may get days when you feel ok and they are then followed by days full of various problems. I still get easily tired and my stomach is often upset. My joints ache at times and my periods are a nightmare. So good luck.
