Is it the coffee or the caffeine?

I know that coffee is supposed to affect thyroid meds, but is this because of the caffeine, or the actual coffee?

I have started drinking decaff tea and coffee throughout the day, and have only one or two 'full strength' cuppas in the morning.

By the way, I need my cuppas, I'm struggling to finish my PHD!! :)

I too would be interested to find the answer as I have changed to decaf also

I drink strong black coffee. Certainly not decaf!

Whether or not that is OK is another matter but I do not feel that I suffer from doing so.

There is interaction with coffee if taken near each other (impaired absorption) - but I am not convinced the story would have been any different with tea, hot chocolate or anything else than water!

My Dr and pharmacist told me it was the calcium carbonate in milk that affects the absorption of thyroxine, so I don't think it's the caffeine. There are other things that affect the absorption too like Fibre, antacids, etc which is why the suggest taking it on an empty stomach with water!

Good luck finishing your PhD! I remember how tough the last few months of my PhD were.
