Recently diagnosed with thyroid and lymph node cancer. ENT proposed surgery to remove entire thyroid and fat packet containing lymph node that biopsy determined was cancerous. Packet may contain many lymph nodes and will be sent to pathology after removal.Would like to hear from others who have gone through this surgery and what they've experienced afterwards. Thank you.

Thyroid/lymph node cancer

Hi
In 2019 Sept experienced STROKE (Embolic), Rapid & persistent AF, and on Day 4 Thyroid Cancer papillary through a carotid arteries scan (all clear) a shadow on my throid up against outer edge of right lobe. On examination another surgeon found bits in my left lobe.
In Feb 2020 my careful general surgeon operated.
I had thyroidectomy, 12 lymphs removed (2 infected) and dissected the right lymph node bed. There are 100 lymphs - 50 each side of the thyroid. Which lymphs to take must be a goldmine.
I had 2 saline drips put through from 5.30am AWAKE and a full blue dye one up to 1 hr before my operation.
He was careful to get bits out of the way! Voice box, arteries clipped back etc.
I awoke with bed moving! Well my feet were. Head up high.
I was hungry. There were two hanging contaners for draining fluid.
A sore throat but I was hungry. No tea. So nurse got me 2 boxes of ENSURE.
I had a good night.
No harm to my PARATHYROID and no trouble with Calcium. And my TSH was low-normal 1.9 but lowering.
No complications.
I used ALOE VERA only on wound and water.
Year 4th Feb I was recalled on my ultra-sound 3 parts 2 lymph and a 19mm x 9mm macro-calcified.
But follow up CT scan, PET Scan and another 6 monthly CT Scan with RA Iodine hasn't proved anything - like cancer.
I refused R.I. Iodine treatment - post thyroidectomy.
I got down to 0.7 TSH just in normal range and refused to stay down to suppression. as bad for your heart (I had heart condition and AF. And I was 70 years.
Cancer in Thyroid and 2 lymph node metasis is labelled LOW RISK.
I changed to SYNTHROID - easier to keep TSH @ 1.7. Reliable, kiddie proof, date of expiry, condensation thing inside, Sealed.
I take 125mg early norning. 1 hour before breakfast. No milk or iron 4 hours.
Diet no soy, seaweed, too much greens, Tofu. No licorice, oestrogen patches, as they interfere with TSH. You might eat other things which are a NO. Get tested regularly for tSH, T3 and T4. Thyroglubin Serum and antibodies and have a yearly check - ultra-sound.
Here in NZ I get Dr to write for test and I copy off 6 .
I and my surgeon follow MR & DR GARY CLAYMAN who is top of USA Thyroid Surgical Centre.
He wrote ATLAS HEAD AND NECK and I read all about my operation after it.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Glad you're doing well. Your response was both enlightening and helpful. Thanks again, Max
Hi
So glad I could enlighten you to the ins and out of thyroid cancer.
I got into a regime of the alarm at 5am but over time I changed to 6am then 7am.
But I have to fit in AF heart pill and I have oats in water with fresh fruit.. kiwifruit or banana and sometimes I put rhubarb but it has a contra thing like peaches.
Do ask any questions at any time. I would love to help you.
Some take T3 but 2 brazil nuts a day and beef liver once a weeks keeps up the selemium naturally. Vitamins and supplements are not necessary if you include natural fruits and salmon, oily fish and walnuts including seeds will keep you well.
Vit D is important and early am sun in NZ suffices.
Do take care.
