What is Fobmaps.
Fodmap diet, it's a diet where foods that ferment in the gut are excluded-dairy onions apples-a lot of fruits and things are excluded. I've been loosely on this diet after suffering from ibs and gradually introducing dairy products back-ate a few slices of pizza last night-haven't been able to in ages without being in crippling pain! The best thing I've found is to listen to yourself and what your body is ok with and not ok with. My doctor said my ibs was nothing to do with the food I'm eating and if I really thought that I should go see the quack up the road-it's been really good to prove him wrong!
Hi,
The low FODMAP diet initially cuts out 5 food groups: fructans, fructose, lactose, oligos and polyols. It works brilliantly for me, and gives me 98% control over my symptoms. I found a few other triggers outside of these groups (most notably rice and oats), but these were easily identifiable once I’d solved the main problem.
The best thing to do if you want to give it a go is to ask your GP for a referral to a dietitian who has done the FODMAPs course.
If you can't get a referral, you can do the diet yourself and the best information is at: med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/.... This is the site for Monash Uni in Australia where the diet was developed. There’s a lot of info on there, plus if you have an iPhone there’s a really useful app you can download. Patsy Catsos's book 'IBS - Free At Last' (available from Amazon) also gives excellent guidance, food lists, recipes and a plan to follow.
