What is going on????

Good Day all who are reading this post: Have had an unusual attack and have never been in this situation before, Had food poisoning from eating shrimp twice in the same week at the same place. Got stool tested and came back with campylobacter. I was given 5 days of Cipro which I have taken before but not as long 20 years ago. That was over a mo. ago that I have been off the antibiotics I still have diariah and have done it all to stop this...Never have I ever been a "loose" pooper so this is all news to me! Charcoal, BRAT diet, pre and probiotics, but I still have the fast urge to go every 3--4 hours...Doc's say it takes time to heal an "angry" hot intentions that have been stripped of all that is good...but really now...Did I this whole scenario throw me into a possible IBS pattern? Appreciate all your wisdom...

This is how some people have their IBS start up. The food poisoning is blamed for starting the IBS. My theory is that it is just part of IBS setting itself in motion.

It really can take some time to get back to normal after food poisoning+antibiotics. Your system has experienced a fair bit of turmoil. After just a few days of antibiotics recently it took me about three weeks to get back to normal, even with massive strains of probiotics. In the meantime, I recommend a combination of soluble fibre and lots of water (8 glasses a day min) because doing that binds the stool. Also it could help to stick to foods that are easy to digest for now (so avoid things like red meat, fried foods, saturated fatty foods, cheap cheese, processed foods with lots of additives). Avoid coffee, chocolate and energy drinks as they stimulate the bowel. Be aware that high fat foods, even healthy fats, also stimulate the bowel as soon as you start eating them (this bowel stimulation is called the gastrocolic reflex).

Peppermint capsules can help relax the bowel to reduce urgency. If you've not taken them before, take a small dose first as there is a tiny chance you'll be intolerant to it.

I hope things start getting back to normal soon, do go back to your doctor if they don't. You might need a stronger+different strain of probiotics, too.

Thank you for all of your wisdom! Seems that the Licorice Peppermint tea is harmonizing well... still working in out ..

I am simply amazed at this whole process..I am being retested for the Camploybactria and for Jardia plus some other strains of bugs. There is no rhyme or reason to the whole process. What I have come to realize is that i eat a basic IBS diet anyway so this has been an eye opener for me. Headed to the Natural-pathic doc next week...Wanted to be seen anyway...Oh and did I mention that I have thelessima minor? I have seen that is in some studies that this could be affecting why its taking me so long to get to a stable place.

Being an herbalist I am getting ready to hit the walnut tincture after the tests come back if they are negative...As far as the emotional part of things...I can totally see the mind body connection for all who suffer from IBS. When I asked the initial doc who gave me the cipro if this set me up for IBS he said oh no that is not possible...The funny thing is that the second testing he said I am all clear and I need to go to a specialist because he is clueless to what is going on...

I could write volumes about this but will save it for later...thank you for reaching out.

From my understanding, antibiotics are not always effective against campylobacter. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. The other issue is that it can recur in some people and this is a separate issue from IBS which is triggered by food poisoning. My husband had it last year and he was not given antibiotics. He was ill for 8 days and then recovered. The GP told him that if it recurred, he would give him antibiotics but there was no guarantee they would work. If you are no better then another sample might help?

Went back to the doc and he is retesting for same and other things...Taking some charcoal seems to help...things are shifting so I am hopeful ...thank you for your post.

Antibiotics basically kill everything so you have no good bacteria in your gut and that needs to get back in. Try probiotics. I have actimal as I’m not a fan of tablets plus apparently it’s better in that form than tablets anyway. That’s what dr told me anyway.

Although antibiotics are needed some times it does cause big problems for the gut :( especially if you have strong ones or end up have two lots

Hi there, I used to be able to eat anything when I was younger and nothing ever affected me. Back in 1996 I had food poisoning and my tummy has never been the same since albeit it's much better than it was when I was first diagnosed with IBS. I was diagnosed in 1997 after a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy. I try and control mine through diet and know there are foods that I cannot eat.

I don't think antibiotics do anyone any good whatsoever and as far as I'm concerned they are overused. A more natural approach I feel is the best and I see you have had very good responses from others on here.

All the very best.

You are most welcome. Also, I never mentioned Kefir, this is something I have tried from the supermarket but have yet to make my own, it tastes lovely and works as a very good probiotic for quite a few people.

All the very best.
