Work Dinner

I just wanted to post an update for my IBS journey. I was recently invited to a celebratory work dinner with my bosses and colleagues to a nearby restaurant. I haven't really confided in them about my IBS symptoms (which have gotten much better but I still get symptoms and flare ups, alongside anxiety). I was deliberating whether I should go or not, but I thought the last few weeks, I had been relatively calm symptom-wise and they were quite keen for me to go, so I said yes.

I did look over the menu beforehand and was going to pick what I thought were safe choices.

On the actual day, I did feel a little nervous. I had heard from other users on this forum that some take Imodium as a preventative measure, so I took some a few hours before. At the restaurant, some of the people arrived late, and also the service was a little slow, so I waited a long time to eat (I ended up eating much later than I normally do). I actually picked something completely different to what I thought was my safe choice - they had a fish of the day cooked with garlic butter, chips and salad, which was quite popular with most of the party, so I had this. The portion size wasn't too big. For me, garlic and onion can be a trigger but I was relatively ok. I also had a piece of crab and onion pate on flatbread!

At the restaurant, I didn't feel any huge symptoms although I did feel very tired. Luckily, I got a lift home, so I didn't have to wait a long time for public transport (which caused an issue the last time I ate out) and I quickly got back. Later on at home, I did have some gas but no cramping or toilet trouble. I still feel like I couldn't relax or fully enjoy the moment, especially as it was with colleagues. However, I was quite pleased that I managed to go out and eat a meal in public, with no large side-effects!

Well done.👏 Anxiety can ruin our social lives. Sometimes we’ve got to go for it & think what’s the worse that can happen? This is from someone who talks from experience 😵‍💫.

Best wishes.

Good for you. In the past, if I'd been invited out for a meal with ex-work colleagues, I'd time it so that I join them at the end of the meal for a chat - a bit of a half way house I suppose. This was to save the embarassment of asking waiting staff 20 questions about the vegetables of the day (which they don't tend to be on the menu) and ending up with a boring meal with hardly anything on my plate.

If I had eaten all that I would have been curled up on the floor!! and definitely would have had an accident.

Yes well done. I have turned down so many social events, overanalysed everything I eat. I have just made myself miserable. I take immodium now if I'm eating out, avoid spicy foods, and avoid travelling on public transport,
