stress

I have been on here a few times talking about IBS C and my diverticulitis - most days I can go after taking an enema - sometimes a good clear out sometimes just a load of wind - I thought I was getting on top of it but now I have a load of stress as my wife was in hospital for three weeks with delirium paranoia. She is out now but the problems continue…they tell me her brain is ok after scans and hopefully it will go - one day she seems ok the next we have an incident. However I wish it would not affect my bowels so badly - back to pains every morning. Any thoughts - thanks Ian

Ian, I am so sorry you and your wife are going through this. My kindest wishes to her, and to both of you.

That is not an easy time for you, and isn't just average stress, but quite deeply upsetting in some ways, I'm sure.

I can imagine if you have a sensitive gut, the worry is taking its toll on that part of your body.

I was told once by a health professional that we all take stress and hold on to it in different parts of our bodies; some people might get heart symptoms, another person it's asthma attacks, and for some it's the gut etc.

I probably can't help very much. You seem to be doing what works and helps you usually ? (i.e. the enema) But it's just not working as well now?

But I'd say if you haven't got an actual diverticulitis flare right now, then eat easy to digest foods which have good amounts of fibre. Something like avocado is good because it's so easy to digest, and contains fibre plus some natural sorbitol. Carrots might help too, leafy greens, swedes and beetroot. Whole grains and brown rice.

Wishing you both the best and hope things improve as the days go by.

Luisa thanks so much for your reply ….it is so hard! One minute she seems normal the next she is in tears completely out of character - aggressive and in a paranoid attack…it is lovely to hear from you….i will take your advice on board…new tablet for her tomorrow plus more blood tests..omg I don’t really think she is going to recover properly x

I will say a prayer for your wife tonight, Ian.

And my own kind wishes for you both.

so sorry to hear about your situation - I share your sensitivity - any stress worsens my IBS C. Do you do any form of relaxation breathing or mindfulness meditation to help switch off the stress response so your bowels can relax? I find kiwi fruit help (2 a day) and buscopan for the stomach cramp. I hope things calm down for you and your wife and that you have enough support
