Just wondered if anyone else has experienced problems with red cabbage, I added some to a meal I also have and are fine with, but this time it made me really ill 🤒

Red cabbage
I think maybe cabbage might be a step too far! I suppose it depends on the person, but I am quite wary with cabbages of all types. I can manage a very tiny portion of well-steamed spring greens occasionally, and young Kale leaves seem to be OK for me, but sadly I wouldn't risk red cabbage just yet anyway, even though other milder greens suit me fine (watercress, spinach, Pak Choi etc). It sounds like it's the same for you?
I hope you feel better now. It's always worth experimenting though to see what suits us or not, and in what amount. Cooking methods can make a difference too.
Hi, in general, I find I need to be sparing with anything that has high anthocyanins. For example, purple beetroot, red wine, red cabbage, blackcurrants, blackberries, mulberries. They have a tendency to 'go straight through', so I limit them to a small amount. I am however OK with golden beetroot and white wine, so by a process of elimination, for me at least, anthocyanins can be a problem. As with many things in this group, it is trial and error and finding what suits you.
I also have trouble with the cabbage, but am OK with green beans carrots and spinach. You may find the fruit and veg guide of the fodmap diet helpful. It works for some.
Spinach, geeen beans and carrots are not only low Fodmap but are also low fibre so less likely to cause a problem on both counts. I have just been hospitalised with a bad bout of Colitis and have to follow a low fibre diet for a time and all 3 have been recommended. There is an app - Fodmap A - Z - which I find very useful. I have had IBS for a number of years and have done the Fodmap Elimination diet under the guidance of a hospital dietician but was on it for 8 weeks - too long - and, although it helped a bit in recognising food groups to avoid, I found that food I had easily tolerated previously caused problems. This app has been so useful as a quick check fo fodmaps.
Thank you. I don’t have a direct link but here it is on the App Store so you can recognise it. Just enter ‘A-Z Fodmap’ and it should come up. It’s very simple but helpful for a quick reference.
