Bam stoole sample
Calprotectin is a marker for inflammation. So that means there are some signs of inflammation in your gut. A higher than normal level is as far as I have heard, pretty common. Also it can come and go. There can be raised calprotectin even with "just IBS" (I hate saying that! There is no"just" about IBS". It's a devil itself.)
But there are all sorts of reasons for gut inflammation, some can be temporary, and some can mean IBD (inflammatory bowel) is a better diagnosis, or other inflammatory conditions.
It's good that the doctor has referred you for a CT though, to get a better idea what's going on.
I wonder if high levels of bile acids probably going on for some time could cause some inflammation which might pass when that is sorted out?
Have you been prescribed Cholestyramine or some other bile acid treatment for the BAM? If so, is it working? If so, and if it is, and the BAM is under control, then the inflammation may not be related.
I don't know, because I haven't any experience myself with BAM. But someone else here might also have had raised Calprotectin while BAM was doing its thing.
Thanks for the reply yes i take colesevelam for the bam i was taking 2 a day but doc said just take 1 as they where making me constipated even the 1 does that doc did say it could be the bile acids aggravating my colon and stomach as i get really bad pain before and after a bowel movements
On my patient record results, it shows the normal level of calprotectin of less than 50. You can ask for your full patient record results as a print out, which shows all your tests you have had done, the result and the normal ranges for each.
However, being more than 50 still doesn't necessarily mean anything sinister. In fact, less likely than likely, but it is used as a guide for further investigation. Mine was 327 and I was still diagnosed with a healthy colon and an IBS diagnosis after colonoscopy.
I am not sure why they are referring you for a CT scan, unless it is a CT colonoscopy.
I would ask for a colonoscopy and an endoscopy , and a small camera pill that you swallow will take pictures of your small intestine and will poop out in about a day or 2. You wear this recording device on you while the camera goes through your small intestine, I had calprotectin of 228 3 months ago and had a done again and it’s 154 now, then your whole intestine is done. Also get a crp blood test, another inflammation marker.
