Amitriptyline titration

Hi, my first post here. I was recently diagnosed with "possible IBS" as biopsy excluded Coeliac. I have been put on a low FODMAP diet and I am trying to follow the guidelines to the best of my ability. I have also been asked to up Amitriptyline, (which I was already on because I also have MS, lucky me!) from 30mg/day to 50mg/day but a couple of days after I had added the first 10mg extra (ie at 40mg/day) I started having really heavy palpitations and so returned to 30mg/day. In your experience is this something that could be avoided adjusting titration or not? also , in which way does Amitriptyline help your IBS? I'm confused by the fact I already had a dose that keeps MS pains at bay (somewhat) but why not have effect on stomach cramps?

Hi there, so sorry you're going through all this. I take amitriptyline for IBS D and although it hasn't solved things at all it has offered some aid to severe diarrhea etc. I find it slows my system down (if I take too much it can constipate me) and can reduce tummy sensitivity. Often if I have a flare up I'll take an additional tablet straight away as it can take the edge of things. I'm not sure if you have IBS D, C or M. Hope this reply is helpful though! 😊
