Macrogol (Dulcoease)

Hi, has anyone else found that laxative treatments containing Macrogol increases their pain and bloating considerably? I have just been put on this and Mebeverine, but am still in a lot of pain, which seems worse when I take Macrogol. Thanks

How long have you been taking it? Sometimes, these things take a little while.

I started with sachets for a few days, which seemed to make the pain worse and then Dulcoease with Mebeverine but the pain is so bad again I can only think I’m sensitive to the Macrogol.

I think you should tell your doctor as there are lots more laxatives that they can prescribe so don’t suffer in silence especially if they are making you feel worse xx

Absolutely agree. Mebeverine makes me more constipated and does not stop any pain . Macrogol gives me severe cramps for days. I avoid both now at all costs.

Have you tried fybogel?

I've had a similar experience with it in the form of laxido.

Bloating, aching and inflamation and not able to tolerate food or have a BM when I did eat. With me it locked my gut up and that was with just 1 sachet a day, although I did start on 3 sachets a day on my GP's advice.

I mentioned it to the doctor who shrugged it off as unlikely as its deemed as safe but after 3 months of use I ended up hospitalised with a swollen bowel not able to have a BM and unable to stomach anything other than water and Ensure shakes sipped slowly over a period of time.

I had CT scans and a colonoscopy, all of which drew a blank. For me this confirmed what I already knew that it was the laxido that done this to me.

I'm still recovering from it and still have extreme bowel pain 6 months later, specially in the lower left.

Try alternatives such as lactulose if you can tolerate it, for some it causes a lot of wind.

I'm now on constella but have started taking it intermittently, preferring more natural remedies.

I've just had 3 days without it thanks to fybocalm constipation and alflorex.

Doctors are quick to deal with the symptoms without treating the underlying cause.

200mg magnesium and valerian root on an evening both help me sleep at night and have the added bonus of stimulating the bowel the next morning.

Try healing and restoring your mucus membrane and good gut bacteria and take macrogol sparingly if you must, I'll never touch it again but also don't leave yourself back at square one, try to keep things moving as best you can with whatever works and take it one day at a time.

Good luck! 👍

Thank you for all your comments, that really confirms what I thought. I haven’t taken anymore Macrogol since yesterday morning, just Mebeverine but I have still got quite bad tummy pain after another bad night. I’ve had IBS for years, but for some reason it’s badly flared up since Christmas. Oh the joys!

I've taken a sachet of Movicol every night for 5 years and I've got used to it. It's the best of a bad lot for me!

My experience with Macrogol powders (for which there are many different brand names) is that it is beneficial. I have been taking it daily for about 3 years and if I miss a dose that is when the pains occur and I become blocked up again, leading to even more (difficult) visits to the loo. After much experimenting I find I need one powder a day plus an additional one on alternate days. I also take Esomeprazole (PPI) daily half an hour or so before breakfast, but am less convinced that it helps - not that you would expect it to, but it does have an impact on belly ache.

I use laxido and linacoltide 30 mins before breakfast and 30mg of amitripltyine at night, i have tried everything and this seems to work for me.

I just started using Macrocol (Pegorion in Finland). Doesn't suit me at all. Yes it works great with constipation but makes me so bloated that even eating a banana started to hurt. Couldn't sleep for 2 nights because of lower abdominal pain. I have never had any problems with any medicines apart from pain killers containing morphine (they give total constipation) but this Pegorion is impossible to use for me. Now after 5 days I will stop. It takes also so much fluid from the body into the colon that I had to pee like 10 times a day. Lost 2 kilos in 3 days. Now I stopped today and feeling better and weight is already 1 kg higher.

Horrible stuff, doesn't work at all for me.
