Hi 3rdNettydoon,
I don't recall the post you mention, but I would say that I take betablockers (Atenolol) because I have high blood pressure. Have done for years. At one point they changed it to Ramipril, an (ACE) inhibitor, but it really messed with my IBS so I got it changed back to Atenolol. I would say that I think the Atenolol does have a slight calming effect which may help a little with the IBS. But I guess your GP would not prescribe it for IBS itself but you could always ask!
All the best, Maureen
hi, I suppose betablockers might help with diarrhoea because it's a diuretic (as well as helping with anxiety). I used to be prescribed it because I have a problem with sweating (seriously, standing still, and sweat would be dripping down my arms and off my elbows, it was awful), and it helped. So, it would, I suppose, stop your diarrhoea being so - diarrhoea-y, with it being a diuretic, you know? However, with it being a diuretic it made me really dehydrated, and I'd get muscle cramps, so I don't know. It would help with stress, I think, because betablockers do. I had to stop taking it, but this was years ago and I hadn't quite grasped that drinking more water might have helped. That's my experience with propanolol. Not sure if it's any help but good luck
I take propranolol for heart palpitations brought on by my gut problems. It definitely helps slow things down a bit
the beta blocker is called propranolol.i used to take it for anxiety
Hi there! I haven't started taking it yet so not so much help sadly, but my gastro has just prescribed me a low dose of propranolol saying he thinks it will be helpful for my IBS d when my main trigger is anxiety/stress. Happy to report back once I begin taking it if it helps at all. Encouraged by some of the posts on here ☺️ happy new year and best wishes. FYI I also take a low dose of amitriptyline daily and this has helped my IBS d but the dose isn't high enough to impact anxiety.
