Hi , Has anyone else lost weight drastically. I went for my annual health check because I have hypertension. The nurse was shocked that I had dropped from 96kg to 67kg I did explain to her that I had cut out a lot of food and also have had bad flare ups this year . I'm not overly concerned because I've been 55kg In the past . I'm just wondering is this normal for IBS sufferers or should I be worried. My cardiologist did tell me 96kg is not overweight, but not to put any more on due to me having hypertension.
Thank you all in advance

Ive lost a stone in about 5 weeks but i have been trying to loose weight and then had a stomach flare up. They decided to do more tests as they seem concerned and want to rule everything out first.
I would suggest that if theyre concerned they do more to help you from loosing weight.
I had a very bad flare up in the summer, I lost nearly a stone in weight. I was so scared to eat very much as I couldn’t get myself back to normal . I had tests and all negative just the devil that’s IBS so had to take Colfac for 3 weeks and it settled it. But the worst thing was most nutrition was going through me and my hair started to thin dramatically. I’m only now just starting to get it back where it was . I feel I left it to long before I went to doctor , I really don’t like medication as all ways side effects. . If it happens again as is as bad I will go to Doctors much earlier. I have put some weight back on but I’m feeling much better and really watching what I eat so not to cause any more issues. Obviously stress plays a huge part as well, and I definitely was stressed at the time.
Hi, has your hair started to recover, as I am in a similar position and my hair is very thin now. I know if the follicles are damaged it won’t regrow. Hope things improve for you.
Hi, yes my hair is recovering but slowly. It takes time , I have spent money on tablets recommend for hair growth and also a product you rub in to your scalp. I’m not promoting anything but I find these work for me. It does take time, when I was ill I really didn’t notice my hair I was so focused on my IBS and being stressed. I’ve had IBS for many many years and never experienced it so so bad so you obviously start stressing about stuff. I was barely eating and what I did went straight through, I did take Imodium but agai they gave me side effects. So went back to basics with FOD MAP , diet and tablets from Dr and it turned around . Then I saw my hair had got much thinner, I just hadn’t really noticed. Anyway I did start taking hair supplements and I can honestly say they are working and no hasn’t effected my IBS. It’s a slow process and it costs money but I feel it’s worth it. That’s my opinion it could help you but I guess it may not help everyone.
Thank you, I will investigate the tablets. I too have had IBS many years, since I was a child, but they called it colic then and advised against eating citrus fruits, fried food and too much ‘roughage’ (fibre) and that was it!,
Oh yes , well when I was first diagnosed my consultant said IBS used to be called Spastic Colon 🤔. Really !!! Yes do some research the tablets can be expensive but the well known on line retailer has good offers . The hair stuff you rub in is on line only but apparently it’s Harrods best seller got hair growth . Begins with a C !!!! Good luck .
Just a thought. When you come out of an IBS flair up, stress levels drop and you start eating better, so wouldn't your hair start to grow back anyway. Then all the fancy products and miracle cures take all the credit.
Hi , not necessarily. As a woman of a certain age and gone through menopause your hair changes in a lot . I’ve taken supplements for many years when I felt my hair was getting perhaps shall we say not at its best . They worked for me. Having gone through the worst flair up ever my hair went much thinner, so I went back to using the hair tablets. As with a lot of IBS sufferers and foods you omit you miss out on certain vitamins and minerals especially with IBS D I had nothing to loose except more hair so went back to using them . They work for me, not saying they work for everyone, personal choice . Just giving my experience as a woman on what works for me . Not saying it’s a miracle cure , don’t believe in them . And I’m fortunate to be able to afford them it’s just my experience on a product that helps me so there for someone else .
Hi, I think the body reacts differently , I'm not sure the reason I am losing , I don't think it's anything too sinister. Probably stress in my case . It's better to lose I'm thinking
I found out a year ago that I have celiac disease, and that the digestive problems I was getting from it triggered my Afib. I cut out alcohol and gluten, eat considerably smaller meals, but added a healthy snack to supplement, and try to finish my last meal no later than 7:30 pm.
I lost 30 lbs over about 4 months just from eating less. I became a little concerned that I lost weight so easily, so I increased my food intake a bit and became stable. Lately I have had to watch that I don't gain!
It is good that you are being checked out by doctors, however.
Hi, To be honest I don't mind the weight loss. I did need to lose a few pounds here and there . I'm not sure I'm being checked out . The nurse just said be mindful you don't lose anymore . Now to keep the weight as it is now , just hoping it's nothing too sinister lurking about.
I know it is worrisome because symptoms of serious illness can include "unexplained" weight loss. If you eat a bit more and stop losing maybe you will feel better. I would think that comprehensive blood tests and checking out any other symptoms of illness would give a measure of reassurance. If you keep losing, I hope you will be assertive about getting your concerns addressed.
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it . Yes it could be a number of things. I had bloods done , no results as yet. If its anything they will contact me. If nothing they won't, hoping its nothing. My ibs flare up had subsided ( for now) I am not eating as I used to, I've cut out a lot of foods . I try not to miss meals , but sometimes It happens . Actimel has helped a lot to dampen the flare up .
Hoping it's just normal weight loss. I'm not really surprised when one is visiting the bathroom a lot.
I know you are well aware of the importance of staying hydrated and getting enough protein. Eating smaller amounts 4-5 times a day (healthy snacking) helped my digestion.
I have celiac disease and have had to figure out what things, in addition to gluten, to avoid. Eating a big meal and eating after about 7:30 pm are no-nos for me.
