Nauseous everyday but I burp and the nausea goes away. What’s causing it?

basically as I put in the title, I’m nauseous everyday but I burp and the nausea goes away. What does that sound like is causing it? Can anyone relate to it and what helps it?

That’s literally the symptoms, no pain or bloating, very occasionally get acid reflux or heartburn. I literally feel like I’m about to throw up but I never do, I burp and it’s gone. It only started about 3 years ago.

thanks

edit: I’ll feel nauseous then the feeling goes away like the wind has moved but I don’t physically feel anything then I burp and that’s it sorted. Sometimes I have to burp about 10 times!

I get this sometimes too. The nausea is a build up of gas putting pressure on the system. When you burp, you are clearing the gas.

The build up of gas may be down to gas not clearing properly, due to weak muscles in the abdomen. Additionally, I find that mine can be food related e.g. eating too many veggies in one sitting. There may also be food intolerances involved.

You may need to review your diet and see if you are consuming lots of gas producing foods e.g. broccoli, garlic, onions, leeks, cabbage, beans etc. Unfortunately, these foods are also good for you. It could be down to just the quantity or having a food intolerance to a specific item. If you suspect food intolerance you could try Alflorex probiotic. It contains Bifdobacterium which can improve the microbiome which breaks down the residue of foods in your intestines, it helps to digest complex carbohydrates and to reduce gas producing bacteria. This may make you more tolerant to a wider range of foods. If that doesn't help or help enough, ask for referral to a FODMAP elimination and reintroduction trained dietitian. This will involve keeping a food diary to find out which specific foods are causing this.

thanks so much this is really helpful and interesting. I think I’ve got a bit of exploring/experimenting to do!

That's a coincidence as I'm going through the exact same thing at the moment. I've had it before, I believe it might be Silent Reflux - though I also get a slightly croaky voice and mild sore throat at times with it. I put myself on some Omeprazole to see if I can get on top of it (you can get it over the counter, at least in England).

I’ve tried that it did nothing for me. Silent reflux that’s interesting, I’ve never heard that before.

It might be because there's excess wind in your stomach, and the stomach feels...oops...too full...something needs to come up! and that triggers a nauseous feeling?

If it's just that, then it's quite natural I would think.

Just now after dinner which I had a good appetite for) I got a heavy feeling in my stomach like I'd swallowed a rock. My dinner was healthy and fairly light, and my usual kinds of foods which suit me. Also my IBS hasn't been so bad lately.

All I needed to do was burp! Now I feel okay again.

I usually eat very slowly, but this evening I think I wolfed my dinner a bit too quickly because I was so hungry. Try eating slowly, chewing each mouthful well. Also try not talking while eating or drinking anything at the same time.

Problem solved with me anyway and I don't read anything else into it.

I think with IBS our guts get a bit sensitive, plus there's a negative feedback loop goes on and I think that's based on past experiences with our guts which can sometimes be unpredictable and a bit traumatic.

If you can burp a bit and that's the end of the bad feeling then it gets kind of solved. But if you have a problem with excess wind I think there are things you can try for it. Home remedies that spring to mind: Rennie deflatine, and/or food grade peppermint oil, 2 drops in a small cup of boiled hot water. I think chewing a couple of cardamom seeds helps too, or a fennel tea.

it’s definitely excessive and not normal and only started 3 years ago it never happened before. It’s horrible nausea, to the point I really think I’m going to have to run to the toilet and be sick any minute and it can last for ages. It makes me uncomfortable being out in public.

I remember the feeling of eating to much or too fast (and not feeling sick), then burping and relieving it and it’s a different thing from what this is or it might be similar but with this horrible nausea.

For example I woke up this morning feeling sick and I still feel sick hours later, it doesn’t matter what I’ve tried. And this goes on every day and a few times a day.

I’m currently experimenting with everything I can think of/is suggested to me plus I’ve got a GI appointment and eating disorder clinic coming up. I’m determined!

It’s interesting what you said “I think with IBS our guts get a bit sensitive, plus there's a negative feedback loop goes on and I think that's based on past experiences with our guts which can sometimes be unpredictable and a bit traumatic.”

I do wonder how much of this for me could be psychological, our digestive system is our second brain and we can get caught up in psychosomatic things.

But whatever it is, it’s a major pest that isn’t straight forward. The above symptoms are only part of the problem, I wanted to ask about my upper digestive system issues specifically without getting lost in to many details.

Yes, when you describe the feeling more, it does sound rather extreme. There can definitely be a psychological effect which can bring on a sense of dread or something, that loops back and forth between guts and brain, but I don't think it's wise to assume that's all it is.

Assuming something is in the head/emotions can sometimes be a huge mistake. Because a straightforward physical problem can cause emotional upset and the psychological effects can disappear when the physical problem is treated.

You shouldn't have to feel so horrible every day (or so frequently) Plus if you feel so sick you probably aren't eating properly. 3 years is a long time with it.

I hope the GI appointment isn't too long to wait for? And that will be helpful.

Have you ever tried an OTC anti-nausea tablet for it?
