I was taken into hospital yesterday with severe pain in my upper stomach and vomiting and dyreah After investigating I was given mebevrine medication. This happened 2 or 3times a year can anyone advise me what I am doing to cause these extreme episodes and how to avoid them

Just it's ibs and has given me 10 days worth of mabervarn tablets Since then I have spoken to gp and he suggested I follow a formal diet I haven't got a clue whete to start

What is a formal diet?
Do you know what your triggers are? First step would be to find out what they are by keeping a wellness diary this will help to identify what your triggers are and learning what works for you have a read about the dairy here theibsnetwork.org/blog/how-...
There may be other factors that are linked to your symptoms that have nothing to do with food, ie stress, anxiety life style factors, work. Taking medications, may well not be the answer.
Taking medications and diet, lifestyle changes ect will help but once you have discovered your triggers, there may be something causing them that you are not aware of and then you can start to look at what works for you diet or medication and self-management. A healthy diet isn’t always the solution some parts of that healthy diet may be a trigger food for you.

Other than these episodes do you normally struggle going to the loo or the opposite?
This happened to me also, months of pain in upper stomach and severe bloating, doctor put me on Fybogel twice daily and my symptoms have improved considerably. Even though we have diarrhoea there can still be a blockage in the colon that causes the pain and nausea. Worth a try because whatever I eat doesn’t seem to help the symptoms or make them worse. Good luck.
I have no idea what a ‘formal’ diet is - is it possible you misheard and the GP actually said Fodmap? Just suggesting this as the tablets are Mebeverine- it’s not always easy to pick up the names when they are just spoken especially when feeling unwell and stressed. However if he wants you to follow the Fodmap diet he needs to refer you a hospital dietician so that you can start with the elimination stage of the diet. Without that it is much harder to find out which, if any, food groups are causing a problem. It’s not easy but does help.
Hi yes it's a fodmap diet he has referred me to dietitian but a guess its a long wait
My wait wasn’t long but it was a consultant in the hospital that referred me and a few years ago too. I hope it helps when you eventually do it. The elimination stage is hard to adjust to at first but you get used to it. Mine lasted for 8 weeks which was too long.

I know you weren’t asking me but apparently the docs and all the tests and stuff say the low fodmap diet is the key to finding out what your triggers are, reducing symptoms by removing those triggers, and then allowing time for your body to be able to try those foods again after a while to see if those foods still trouble you in even very small amounts, and if not kinda finding your tolerance if it’s more.
That being said, for me the low fodmap diet didn’t really help me. Of course I did find out some of my triggers that I didn’t realize I had but on the other hand even low fodmap items that I could supposedly eat gave me bad symptoms or triggered me also. As soon as I can tolerate some foods again, I plan to redo the fodmap diet to find out what my real triggers are because this life right now is miserable and nobody should have to suffer like this!
So I finally got treated for Sibo and I believe that will help with all of the fake triggers from low fodmap foods.
I hope the book you bought is a journal to keep track of foods, symptoms, water, meds, bowels etc! It really is needed for the diet. Good luck to you!
hi thank you so much for your message i have to admit the book was not very helpful so i tried to do gluten free and lactose free that has caused me terrible problems i now seem to have no control with my bowels so i am stopping that and i will wait to see a dietitian just hope things settle down soon.
Sorry to hear you are having a bad time and what is sibo if you dont mind me asking. I agree with you this ibs c is horrendous.

Also you can look up monash university to see about a specific item it goes by red, yellow, and green lights. The thing is some foods are low fodmap in certain quantities. For instance almonds are low fodmap if you have 10, however if you had 20 then it’s high fodmap. And you can’t mix certain foods in the same meal.
Basically the diet is lactose free gluten free no garlic or onions that’s a BIG ONE, only half a non ripe banana but ripe is even less and no really ripe ones at all. Also no high fructose corn syrup, or many of sweeteners! No stone fruits, mango, blackberries, cherries, apples but pineapple, strawberries and blueberries are ok (watch amounts). All meats are ok. No fermented foods at all. See it is very specific. It really seems hard nd I’m not going to say it wasn’t hard for me because it really was. 🙃
