Low Fodmap Diet Help

Hi everyone,

I have been advised to try the above diet but can’t actually find anything specific to follow, the doctor just sent me a link to the NHS website.

I know I must sound stupid, but is it a case of just cutting things out etc?

Any help would be great 😊

The fodmap diet was invented at Monash Un9versity in Australia. Go to there web site and look for fodmap diet. You will find all the details. There are also several books on Amazon that provide detailed descriptions of the diet. It is not just a case of cutting things out. It is also a case of adding things that you may not presently be eating. The diet helps a lot of people, including me. Good luck.

You really shouldn't try the fodmap diet without the support of a medical dietician or a lot of research. As b1b1b1 says it's not as simple as cut out everything on the high and medium list and never eat them again.

The process sounds simple. You cut the high list and stick to the quantities on the medium list for a period of time until your gut calms down, then you slowly reintroduce foods until you find your tolerances. Eventually you will have a modified fodmap diet that your body can tolerate. It really is best to get some proper help to work through it.

I've been on a modified diet for 2 years now and it's honestly made a huge difference to my life. I still have flare ups, either when I eat something I shouldn't or too much of something I can only tolerate small amounts off, or when I get too stressed but it's certainly made a huge difference to me.

It's worth remembering that the fodmap diet isn't a cure and doesn't work for everyone. We each find the system that best manages our symptoms. Good luck

Hi I found it easier to google the things I ate regularly to see if they were low or high fod map and take it from there! Some things on the diet I couldn't tolerate even if they were green and visa versa it seems to be different for everyone unfortunately. Keep a food diary to see if there's any triggers for you it's not easy but in my case was definitely worth the effort, good luck! 👍

Please ask your doctor for referral to an NHS FODMAP trained dietitian. Ideally, this diet needs proper guidance. Doctors should know this.

yes, my doctor sent me a link to the NHS webpage too. One book I can suggest is The Complete Low FODMAP Diet by Dr. Sue Shepherd and Dr. Peter Gibson. Another useful one (although more general advice) is IBS Food, Facts & Recipes by Tracy Parker & Sara Lewis. Also, on the NHS website there is also a useful video about IBS and diet. Just click on the links until you find it.

A FODMAP diet is second line advice and should not be embarked on as a first port of call for managing IBS symptoms there are many other things that can be tried first.

Dietitians are the only practitioners with training and up to date information about the low FODMAP diet, we don’t publish a list of foods as the diet should be completed under the supervision of a dietitian. It isn’t just about food groups it’s about the amount of each food and the amount of each food that is put together within a meal.

The diet is complex and it is vital that the foods removed from a person’s diet are replaced with suitable alternatives to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

We recommend that people are cautious of obtaining information via the internet, much of the information on the internet is no longer accurate because it’s out of date.

Monash the creators of the diet provide data that is evidence-based, it’s been peer reviewed and published in major journals around the world so it can be trusted.

Hence to obtain good results and maintain a healthy balanced diet it is advisable to ask your IBS specialist or GP for a referral to a trained dietitian who will use the latest information.

With that in mind, be very careful from where you obtain your information and FODMAP food lists as much is out-of-date or just simply incorrect.
