Taking Alflorex for IBS-D

So I been suffering from IBS-D for most of my life. For about 2 years. With my mum passing away it has got a lot worse. Mornings have been a complete write off. It was affecting my home life, family and a getting me down.

I recently started taking a probiotic called Alflorex. After about 2 weeks my IBS changed. I stopped going to the loo at least 5 times (uncontrolled) to about once a day (controlled). It feels like my bowl was back to normal.

But soon I started having terrible bloating where it felt sore on my lower left abdomen and a band feeling around my tummy. I never had it before. It was the most uncomfortable feeling currently leading for about 3 days now but slowly easing. Tummy feels weird too. Like someone got a spoon and stirred my insides.

Hopefully it should pass after a few days but passing lots of gas and a sore back.

It feels strange to be in control over my bowl movement.

Glad to hear the Alflorex seems to be helping. I am taking it too and had increased symptoms for the first few weeks, including an increase in bloating, but I persevered and those symptoms disappeared. It has helped cut down on bloating for me but I don't think it has affected my bowel movements (IBS-C). They do say you should give it at least a month to see how it affects you.

I took Alflorex, and went from IBS-D to IBS-C in about 2 months. However, when I stopped taking them, I reverted to IBS-D in about 3 weeks. The manufacturers tell me that the bifidobacteria in the capsule don’t colonise the gut and disappear in about 2 weeks, which is presumably why my symptoms returned. I’ve decided that IBS-C is better than IBS-D (though it hasn’t gone completely), so I’m persisting with it and gone onto the monthly subscription (which is cheaper). I found the new version, which contained calcium carbonate as a prebiotic, made the IBS-D worse, but we’re all different and the same product can have markedly different effects on different people!

Back on the original Alflorex now - I’ll bear in mind Bimuno for future. Thanks
