Has anyone with IBS C been diagnosed with sibo? If so, how did you get tested and what treatment have you had?

Hello edwangy As you know from previous posts I also suffer with IBS-C and suffer ongoing abdominal pain. Two weeks ago I had a Haemorridectomy . Post opp I was given a 3 day course of Metronidazole antibiotic and hey presto the abdominal pains have gone.

Interestingly this antibiotic is used to treat SIBO. So I now think I know the reason for my problems which have been ongoing for the past 3 years.

I did ask my Gastro Consultant early last year if I have SIBO , the answer was a firm NO , it's IBS .

No doubt I will now see another Consultant privately plus my GP to have this theory checked out. Breath test seems to be the standard test.

One of the local Manchester papers also had a very interesting article on this subject.

Hope all is well with you and have success in resolving your question. Take care

Are you still pain free? Most GPs and consultants don't recognize sibo so it's difficult to get the correct treatment. If you suggest any kind of treatment they'll ignore it because they don't want you telling them their job!

Hi Yes still 99% pain free. Hopefully it will last. I also watch my diet , I'm eating more but have reduced sugar intake .Almost all the sysmptoms of SIBO I have , just find it to be to much of a coincidence. From what I read a high proportion of IBS sufferers also have SIBO.

I certainly hear what you are saying about Doctors and telling them their job , guess I will just have to be diplomatic and find an understanding and knowledgeable Doctor. GP will be first on the list.

Hope you have success . Keep us informed.

Thank you Pte82.Interesting reading . Around 3 yrs ago when symptoms started bloods plasma levels showed B12 , Folate and Vit D levels to be very low .They are now at normal levels. Many times I thought there is a link to food absorbtion. Often I feel 'brain fog' , something is missing.

So I guess more discussion with the medics.

Thanks again. Take care

Your brain fog may benefit from a fat soluble B1 like sulbutiamine, TTFD or benfotiamine that can efficiently cross the blood brain barrier. TTFD was mentioned in the article about SIBO. B1 needs adequate magnesium to become bioactive. This link addresses anti thiamine factors that reduce thiamine. The B vitamins work better together.

Hi Pte82

Thank you. A complex subject . As well as IBS-C I also have health anxiety (sleep issues) extremely tired, reflux (GERD) , gastris and a heart arrythmia , so finding a solution is difficult but thankfully no pain currently just a 'head' that does not feel connected.

Would be interested to learn of your issues and treatment.

Stay safe Kind regards

Hi again guitarman,. What meds do you take , do you take lanzsoprazole or similar for gerd?and what is your diet like? There is a programme on sleepio.com website which may help you re sleeping problems. It will ask you where you live as it's only available in certain parts of the world, I said I lived in Scotland and it let me participate. Hasn't helped me really cos my sleeping problems are due to pain but it may help you Give it a try, it may help

Hi edwangyThink might have spoke to early regarding pain - should not have given in to a large piece of cake. Normally well disiplined regarding food - no processed food , low fat , no red meat , no onion , no spices , plenty of fibre , fruit , veg , fish , chicken and fresh bread .No readymade meals , just home prepared.

Medication - Esomeprazole , Famatodine (before bed) , Gaviscon 4x daily and Mebeverine (as required).

Sleeping issue for me is OAB and anxiety (causing breathing issues).

Thank you for the input re your sleeping problems . I'll give it a go .

Appreciate your posts , they help us all exchange our issues which could be relevant and help for a better understanding for us all.

Take care

Hi again,

Your medication for GERD seems very extreme, I used to suffer years ago and was only ever prescribed either ranitidine( same as famitodine) or esomeprozole, never both together and certainly not with gaviscon as well. I'd speak to your doctor again re your meds they may not realise that you are taking these all together. It's a wonder you can digest any food! Yes, we've spoken about pain, are you still free of it? I hope so. Try the sleepio, it may help you to relax and hence, sleep better. OAB can be caused by stress. Take care, let's know how you're doing

Hi edwangy

Appreciate the reply. Yes still relatively pain free and will be discussing my medication with the GP next week. I would certainly like to reduce the PPI but as you know the rebound can be an issue.

Anxiety and stress (although retired) can be a big problem for me partiularly during the night hence the sleep issue.

How is it for you currently , are you in pain ? How did your colonoscopy go ?

Take care

Me againShould have mentioned had the flu jab last Friday and on Sunday the booster Covid jab. So not sure if some of my current symptoms may be influenced / compromised by the jabs. Could be another discussion !

Have you received your jabs any side effects ? Regards

In the eonutrition link is a diagram showing the vagus nerve connecting the brain to various organs. Not shown is it's connection to the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. Inadequate thiamine may prevent adequate signal from the brain for it's role to the sphincter allowing acid to pass into the esophagus. I encourage you to research thiamine for each of the health issues you've listed. Thiamine and magnesium are needed for creating ATP for energy in every cell in the body including the brain. Fat soluble thiamine offer good absorption for the brain and body. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement. My issue for the last 30 has been my wife's cancer and the many problems she faces. I hope these links offer information that gives you answers.

Hi Pte82

Firstly so sorry about your wife . I know how it must be for you both. I lost my wife 10 years ago to Ovarian Cancer. Stay strong.

Secondly thanks again for the info and links. Yesterday I started a Multivitamin tablet as suggested by my locum GP. It contains all the vitamins you have posted about including thiamine and magnesium all at the recommended daily dose. Let's hope there is a positive change.

Back in August my B12 blood plasma level was 683 ng/l (191 - 663) , Vit D was 100 nmol/l (50 - 175) and Folate 17.2 ug/l (3.89 - 26.8).

No PA , no Coeliac disease , no lactose intolerance , no gluten intolerance and no anemia. However for a number of years now I have suspected nutrition issues.

Take care

Hi, IBS C but not been diagnosed with SIBO. I might be suffering from the same problem or dysbiosis, symptoms caused by 'bad' bacteria, disbalance or overgrowth. Currently trying to 'fix' it with bacillus coagulans and berberine but not much improvement till now. Will discuss a trial with an antibiotic again with my new gastroenterologist. Did already try rifaximin but wasn't helpful for me. In the past tetracyclin and augmentin were very effective. They weren't prescribed for SIBO or dysbiosis but for other bacteria related health issues in 1989 and 1997. I noticed that I was getting 'well' during and shortly after the course of antibiotics but when these weren't working anymore all my symptoms came back and stayed unfortunately. Since 2016 invalidity pension because of my health problems.
