For those that are going to have this procedure here's a update! So as most of you will know the prep isn't very nice this time had to drink gastrofen as well this shows up the bowel better on ct it's also a laxative tastes aniseed but chug it down then wash down with water . Ok onto the procedure: canular in buscopan in canular to help stop cramping. Small tube size of little finger inserted in bottom didn't hurt, small balloon inflated to hold tube in place now that feels strange but doesn't hurt. Then the gas is inserted into bowel to open it up for better pictures, now thst l didn't like very much was very uncomfortable but keep in mind this is for 5 mins breath through it, contrast put through canular go all warm quite nice feeling l didn't feel like l was weeing but she warned me it can feel like it though you do not wee just a feeling, then through ct on side again on back then again on front bit more uncomfortable because of bloated bowels but doable. Then finished tube removed an sent to waiting room for 30 mins my tummy looked like l was having triplets so distended it had mainly gone down before l left the department. I kept rubbing it to try help it down. They said yr bogey absorbs the gas. Do not trust a fart though untill you get home as l did an promptly shat myself! Just the wait for results now! Good luck to you all keep you posted xxxx

Don't forget to keep hydrated, particularly with isotonic drinks. I made the mistake of just drinking lots of water, but that dilutes the salts in the blood stream, and the osmotic effect of the Gastrografin just keeps reabsorbing water back into the gut. I came very near to passing out in the shower (the heat causes your blood vessels to expand and reduce your blood pressure - already lowered by the lack of salts in the blood), so I think it's an important precaution to take. As it wasn't mentioned on the instructions for the prep, I told the hospital of my experience and the advice my GP gave to me subsequently, and hope they pass the info onto other patients.

Hope your results are encouraging
