Does anyone have experience of this? After a long wait I have an appointment in 3 weeks and am dreading it. I want to get it done as it may explain why I am unable to empty my bowels properly but the information sheet says I don`t need to do any preparation beforehand (in the way of laxatives etc) but that I might be more comfortable if I have emptied my bowels first. I can`t empty by bowels fully and am very worried that once they start doing the test (which involves inserting things into the rectum) I will have an "accident" - which would be humiliating.
I`m wondering if it would be advisable to use a glycerin suppository first. I don`t want to do anything which might cause a false result.

Hi janke, I had one done about 7 years or so ago. It was extremely useful because they immediately diagnosed the cause of my problems - intersussepcion and rectocele which were causing incomplete evacuation.
It was a bit uncomfortable and it wasn’t just one test, as I remember, but a few things. I was ok with it and wouldn’t be concerned if I needed to have it done again.
I wouldn’t use a suppository beforehand without checking with them first.
Good luck with procedure and hope it gives you some answers.
I have had it done and it was not a pleasant experience but, as you say, the important thing is the knowledge that will be gained. An accident would be the least of my worries. Treat yourself afterwards. Con amore Bx
Dear Janke, I have the same problem as you and have had the anal manometry test and felt exactly as you describe. I think really we have to accept that we have this problem of incomplete evacuation unfortunately but everyone has to poo and there's no shame in it. Anxiety I know is behind the tension in my body. I told the consultant of my fears before he started and I remember him saying laughingly 'there's nothing can happen that I haven't seen a hundred times before' and somehow that relaxed me and again I didn't have an accident. I think it's good to try and see the humour and remember that we are just human beings in bodies that don't always work as we would wish. I agree with b1 that you could check with the GP and do a suppository or something beforehand if it makes you feel a bit more relaxed. Good luck - it doesn't take long either and it's painless.
Thankyou everyone. I do have a phone number for the department which will carry out the procedure so I think I will contact them the week before and ask for advice
