Covid vaccine and IBS

Just wondering if anyone else has had increased problems with IBS after having the covid Vaccine? I`m thinking in particular about the AstraZenica jab.

I had my vaccine on Friday and had a particularly bad day with my stomach yesterday - including feeling sick.

Yes. I had the Moderna vaccine. The first dose, just a very sore arm for three days. The second dose, yikes! stomach ache, chills, and bad headache, some neausea. But it went away in a couple of days. I hope you feel better soon. It should go away within a day or two..I think they gave me a leaflet which I just now found on possible side effects.

Yes it lists nausea as a side effect. I had the AZ and was up in the night following with diarrhoea and chills. But with IBS, as you will know, stress can make things worse so I did wonder if I had got a bit stressed about it. But I felt ok after a day or so.

Yes, I felt I had more G.I. issues. I had the Moderna & felt very sleepy especially after the second vaccination. I wondered if sleeping day & night for many days rather than moving about, was the underlying factor.

Thanks. I`m on day 3 now and still feeling nauseous. But as one of you mentioned, stress does play a big part and it`s hard to know what has been caused by the vaccine and what by being stressed. I was very anxious the day I had it - not about the actual jab but being in a situation where I might have to queue and not be able to get to a toilet if i needed one!

Yes I agree the stress for me was queuing then having to wait afterwards. I was checking out where the toilets were. Deep breathing. Used mindfulness minute on my watch.

I have heard of other people feeling nauseous or even being sick within the first week of the AZ jab.

I see lots of people with a much more ferocious reaction to AZ than we are led to expect by the medical people. Apparently 20% have a reaction but I think it’s much higher than that. I’ve felt nauseous with IBS for several weeks but have been keeping food diary and it started before I had my AZ jab. I am trying Jeanette Hyde’s gut makeover, and it has helped with acid reflux. Guts has also improved but not so noticeably.

Hi, there’s a website that has comments about side effects of the AZ vaccine and there are a lot of comments listing diarrhoea, vomiting and nausea as side effects.

If you search “What are the side effects of the AZ vaccine?” You will find it, it’s an open access gov website.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi, I had a really bad ibs attack ( worst I have ever had) after my AstraZeneca jab. It was about 10 days after so I'm not sure if it was due to the jab. I wonder if anyone has had this experience.

Hiya I too am suffering with severe cramping and diarrhoea about 12 days after my jab. This is very bizarre for me as I am usually constipated.Could have nothing to do with the vaccine but it is making me wonder 🤔.The day after I had it I had diarrhoea too.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry you suffered but it makes me think I'm not the only one. I wonder if there are lots more people who haven't connected the two, especially with it being so long sfter the jab. It certainly made me wonder as my attack was so severe and for no other reason I can think of. I suppose we'll never know.

Guess we won’t but this past week I have been really rough. This must have been caused by something as it’s just not normal for me.Anyway thankfully today no toilet trips or cramps...phew!I’m hoping that’s the end of it.x

I had Astra Zeneca Sunday evening, have been okay up to now. Nothing at all, not even a sore arm. But the IBS has been awful just like it always is. I was worried I would not make the appointment I was in so much pain Sunday and my insides were stinging like mad. My appointment was 6pm and I was too scared to eat before I went! Managed to eat a small sandwich when I got back home. 🙂

I'd heard the AZ vaccine causes nausea and tummy upsets so I asked for the Pfizer one and was fine with that. So sorry you've not been well, I really hope evryone who has suffered feels better really soon.

I had AZ vaccine on Thursday and have had IBS issues since early hours of Friday morning after 5 months of a good stretch.

I just had my second dose of the Pfizer vaccination yesterday afternoon. Today my stomach is not happy in the least. Frequency (with cramping) and nausea. Just hoping it doesn’t last long.

Yes my first dose was astrazeneca. Had bad diarreah, cramps, nausea, aching, headache, chills and generally felt horrible for 2 weeks. Just got a second jab yesterday. Based on what I told them It was recommended that I get Moderna rather than pheizer. Feeling tired and out of it today and have a headache and sore arm but it's not anywhere near as bad as the symptoms form the Astra.

I had the Pfizer one, IBS Started after a few days , lasting until two weeks ago.I am fortunate to only get flare ups about 3-4 times a year, lasting for about a week, this one lasted about 2months

Hi Janke, Me too! I received my first dose of Moderna on Friday 8/30/21. My IBS is up in arms. I feel horrible, i got all the symptoms and side effects just like the flu however, my stomach is all messed up cuz of the drugs inside me, plus the meds I took. I had call my doctor, because I was having cramps and tingles all over my body. He said I was out of whack due to my electrolytes. Hang in there, just drink lots of liquids and rest. Stick to your diet and don't stress.

My therapist and I both had severe relapses of our IBS after our second shot. I am still having problems, but will go for my booster. I would rather wear a diaper than take the chance of getting this virus.
